Luco Quinton The dinner was not enough time for the eldest to process the awkwardness and the bitterness thrown his way. He didn’t have enough time to prepare and he didn’t have enough time to build up his walls. Especially at the eldest sister’s remark about him, he could still feel the hollow sting in his stomach. See, Luco Quinton is a sensitive soul. He didn’t have the sassy remarks and snappy moods like the teenagers and he didn’t have the ability to ignore emotions like the little ones. He reminds himself he got it from his father… he got it from his father…
The table was free of further insults and snapping. One would mistake the silence for peace, but anyone with eyes could notice that it was far from so. All of them were brewing storms and they kept it in. Luco never looked up. Silence can’t hurt anyone. But silence is what deepens every problem. He had just realized how tired he is. 10 hours in a car with a rattle in one of the mud flaps is not marked as joyful. But at least he is here, right? Maybe, just maybe, the sourness will die down once everyone is settled in. Be optimistic, his father always taught him.
Plates emptied and he finally looked up to his family, watching them all evacuate the room in clear rush or pretending not to rush. He rose from his chair and did the same, disappearing out of the room’s view. But before he even reached the stairs, he stopped himself from walking further and turned around, entering back into the dining hall. He could see the clear exhaustion and anxiety in his mother. But nothing in his nature would get a good night’s rest without at least saying hello to her. He had not spoken to her in a long time and after all… she was the reason he came as early as he did.
The blonde man sat down silently across from her. She really looked tired. Frustrated. As if the strain of having so many kids was beginning to eat her from the inside. It was painful to see her like this… and in the back of his head he could already start figuring out why she called him. He could start understanding why she needed help. His help, of all people. His deep blue gaze drifted back and forth between his mother and a young man that’s dressed up neatly. He spoke soft and cautious, he could tell he was one of the staff members, possibly a butler or some kind of assistant. If brought a bit of relief to him: he didn’t have to worry about keeping the house in check at least. Although the housework was not what he feared… it’s his siblings. He kept sitting, his elbows lifting and his fingers twining into each other as he waited.
sorry this took so long >.<

"the fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose"
She had been so horrible and he was nothing but kind. The butler was a well-dressed fellow with a strong British accent. His voice was soft and his eyes were sweet. Lucille found her gaze soften in his light and she felt the need to reach out, but kept her hands close. It was a need for human contact. Contact that she hadn't had since her Michael.... passed.
Instead, when the British butler offered his tea, Lucille forced a grateful grin and nodded her head. She felt the saliva in her throat build and block her voice. But before he left, she found it-- gargled and soft, weak and poor, but she did find it. "Thank you..." She whispered, the texture of her voice lost. "And I'm sorry... My husband told me that sometimes I can be a bit cold." Another half-smile and she met his gaze for only a moment before he went for what he offered.
It has taken her too long to realise that while all the other children had vanished there sat her eldest with his hands crossed over the table and his head pointed downward as he waited for his mother to notice. She almost smiled. She felt that twitch in her cheeks as she remember the night her son was conceived and the look on his father's face when their son finally came into the world. Her first boy... and so much like his father.
"Luco..." Her voice was gaining some strength, but the moisture still prevented it's sweetness. "Darling, what are you still doing here?" Lucille hadn't meant to offend. Luco, her sweet boy, was too concerned with others. He should be taking the time to explore like his brothers and sisters. "You could be off... with your brothers and sisters. Elsie asks about you almost everyday you're not here." A genuine smile found her lips. Her little ones never failed to bring that out of her.

Luco Quinton His thoughts had almost started to wander too far, swaying through the empty corners of the big house and waving over to the university that he just left behind. Did he make the right decision? Was is a necessity to abandon his education to return this soon? Yes. His father would have wanted him to come back at this time. Family comes first. Family will always come first. He could not let any other thought overshadow his decision. He would attend university after he was sure of his family’s well-being, if ever.
The mere thought still scared him. Was this twist in life the one that predicted his future? Was he meant never to be a Wildlife Rehabilitator, but a family man? He would have to get a job now. Their father’s money could not support them forever, right? Was he going to be a family man forever? Stay and support the rest until they get old enough to do so, find a bride and then carry on as a family man? Move away with his own household or just add on in the house they are living in?
“Luco…” the voice of his mother always had a way of snapping him out of his drifting thoughts. His blue gaze came up from his hands to face the eyes of his mother. “Darling, what are you still doing here?” the question came. His tongue pressed against the inside of his lips, ready to open and speak, but he could not find a suitable answer for her question before she continued. “You could be off… with your brothers and sisters. Elsie asks about you almost everyday you’re not here.” For the first time that night, he could fold his gaze upon his mother’s smile. It calmed his nerves a bit like it always did, allowing him to follow her example. Here he was not a university student, almost grown up. He was a Quinton kid and it’s how he wanted it. But is that what they needed?
“I, uh… I thought it might be a good thing to give them some space… it’s… been a long time…” he brought his gaze down to his fingers fiddling with each other, “for some, longer than others.” It came out, his words directing to his bit older siblings. Nevaeh, Nikolai, Damon… he knew they would be a challenge. Theia never was much pleased with him from the beginning, but to be fair, she’s not mostly pleased with everyone. Catalina, Elsie, Elliot… even Akila was always the ones he knew he had a place to go. They always welcome him and he always anxiously awaits to tend to them. He can see himself spending most of his time with them, mostly because the rest will block him out. Will they always see him as an outsider? What would he have to do to earn back his place?
His mind is a real whirlwind of questions xD

"the fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose"
His mind a whirlwind, Lucille could see the emotions run across his exhausted face. Different ideas and notions crossed his borders. Heartless, she felt in that moment, having been the mother that tore her son from his dreams and insisted that he come support his brothers and sisters in these trying times... Selfish as she was for asking, Lucille knew that her son would've made this decision eventually on his own. Luco was good like that. He was like his father in that way, and many others. All good. Lucille rested her hand upon Luco's extended one and cupped it in her palm. His skin was cold like the rest of the room, but filled with a nostalgic sensation, warming Lucille to the core. "Don't worry yourself, Lu." She still smiled. "Things will get better here... I have a good feeling about this." She was hoping that was enough. She pulled back from his touch, eventually, when the moment had passed and pushed back her chair without scratching it against the floor. "Now." She started with a voice lighter and cavalier. "I think I'm going to head to bed... My head hurts and my toes are cold." Her smile broadened. "Goodnight, my sweet boy." Her voice fell back down to a whisper, though more appreciative than nervous now. With some unexpected grace, Lucille rose to her feet, planted a kiss atop Luco's head with her hand supporting his temple, and headed off to bed where she hoped to fall into her dreams of days past and never wake up again. Michael was up early, he wasted no time getting ready for another day. He stopped in front of a mirror to check himself one more time before he left his room, and not seeing anything a miss he smiled and straightened his tie. It didn't need straightening.
He was out the door in a flash and he walked briskly, whistling to himself. He went down the stairs at a pace that was more of a jog. Whenever Michael was working he moved at a brisk pace. Everything he did was efficient. He was in his typical good humor too.
He breezed into the kitchen and started grabbing several things before making his way out into the dining room. Other staff were also going about busily with their jobs and he made sure the table was set and ready for any of the family that decided to come down for breakfast. It had been a hectic night, and a routine had yet to be ironed out. He wasn't even sure if they had actually discussed whether the family would all be coming down or not.
He put out coffee and pastries if they were the on the go type, but they also had a hot breakfast waiting in the wings depending on what the family ordered. He set a pot of English tea on the table and gave a smile. "It's perfection." he admired his own handy work.
He glanced up once to note the time and figured the family should be waking up and moving about by now. He wanted everything to be perfect for this family. He wanted to show them that it was a new day and things would go better today. Addressed: x MENTIONED: QUINTONS, STAFF Tags: Everyone Notes: Michael ready to stir things up! Open for interaction XD

LIFE IS A PILE OF GOOD THINGS AND BAD THINGS...
Late. Victoria was late. Her children were at her heels and she was late. Her children were late. The bus was new to them. Still, the children were unable to catch it before it disappeared behind the trees of the street perpendicular to theirs.
Her hair was uncombed, brushed behind her ears, and blowing violently behind her as she rushed from the car to the front door. Pushing it open, Victoria rushed the kids inside and 'ran' in her heels in the direction of the kitchen; but before she reached the stairs, Victoria was confronted with a familiar English hum.
"Michael?" Her voice was hushed, but curious. Her heels skid to a stop on the marble, and Victoria was staring into the doorway of the dining room. "You did all this?" Her head fell to the side as she studied the colourfully decorated table behind him.
His eyes gleaming, Victoria could tell that he was making more of an effort to welcome the Quintons than any of the others. Her attention drifted in an instant to the Cromwell children she had dragged in there. "Take the bus with the Quintons, yeah?" She didn't wait for their confirmation. They had no choice. "Go get breakfast, maybe..."
She let the purse slide from her shoulder as she crossed into the hall. Her heels no longer clicked; the rug under the chairs froze their sound. "She ask you to do this?" Victoria asked, conversation lacking for her out of fear that her tardiness had been noticed. "Or... you just showin' off?" Her cheeks crinkled in a tease.
Victoria felt that pull. Anxiety crept to her brain and she felt that panic that all employees felt when they made a mistake. "She hasn't noticed I wasn't here, has she?" Her tongue twisted; the 'she' dripped from her mouth like a toxin.

Michael was putting the finishing touches of the setup, he was arranging some flowers on the table when he heard a pair of woman's shoes clicking against the hardwood floors. He glanced up in time to see Victoria spot him by the doorway, children in tow.
"Michael? You did all this?"
Michael gave another charming smile as he looked from her to the table and back. "Now I can't really take credit for all of it." His eyes teased, although he was aware he probably did more than his fair share, but he downplayed his part. Victoria motioned to her children to get breakfast and the trio of Cromwells moved into the dining room. Michael smiled down at the children and then gave a wave toward the table in a 'help yourself' gesture. His attention returned to Victoria as she spoke.
"She ask you to do this? Or...you just showing off?" Her tone was teasing but it held a note of worry to it. Was she worrying that she had missed something? He returned her teasing with a pout. "What kind of butler would I be if she had to tell me to do this?" His pout turned into a wry smile. "And I never show off..."
"She hasn't noticed I wasn't here, has she?" The worry returned with her voice and Michael realized she was fretting about it. He instantly wanted to soothe that anxiety he saw written all over her face. He hadn't wanted to make her feel like she was slipping up at work or something. He turned to his sense of humor again to ease her mind.
"I'm the only one who notices such things."
His smile faded as he realized he just said something that could be construed the wrong way. It was a slip of the tongue, he hoped Victoria wasn't offended by it. He cleared his throat and looked at her children as they eyed the breakfast table. "What I mean is, I think our new mistress had a lot on her mind last night, but I highly doubt breakfast or the whereabouts of the staff are at the top of her priorities this morning."
He turned his head again and gave Victoria a small smile. Then the sound of multiple feet could be heard trekking down the stairs. Michael raised his eyes waiting for the horde of Quintons to come barging into the room. He sought Victoria's eyes one more time before a grin grew on his face that said the show was about to begin. LIFE IS A PILE OF GOOD THINGS AND BAD THINGS...
There were moments when Victoria was with him and she was reminded of Matthew. However more mature and flirtatious he was, there was a spark in him that she once saw in her children's father.
Victoria slid into the room after her children. Those two had herded around the breakfast table like flies to old fruit. Careful to eat it all, Victoria watched them like a hawk. She knew Michael had prepared for this, however, and the table was well dressed in various goodies that feed both the entire staff and each of the Quinton's.
Michael stepped to the side to allow for the Cromwell children to circle around the table and he smirked in response to 5'2" brunette's flirtatious tease. Before Michael, before Matthew, Victoria had always been regarded as a tease and it used to earn her trouble at school and at home alike.
But with Michael it was different. As it had been with Matthew. Victoria felt that pull in her heart and the weightless in her head; unmatched until now.
"Doubt it'll stay that way," Victoria said finally in response to Michael's assurance. "Mrs. Quinton would have me on a boat back to Blackpool. Just give her a reason." There was a tension building between the mistress and the estate manager. The British mother couldn't imagine that that relationship would improve with her current track record.
Victoria froze. Her mind tight on the worst of subjects. Then, she turned her gaze to the floor, smiled and looked back to find Michael was still watching her.
Her eyes softened and she moved to his side of the room in one sift motion, reaching behind him, brushing against his chest as she took up a strawberry from the display and bit into the tip, looking at him with a smile on her lips and mischief in her watch.
"Strawberries are my weakness." She shrugged, and then in that same moment, there was the thundering sound of multiple footsteps coming down the stairs. Victoria turned her head instantly, pulling the strawberry out between her teeth and waited for the chaos to take over the house.

I AM AND ALWAYS WILL BE THE OPTIMIST THE HOPER OF FAR-FLUNG HOPES AND THE DREAMER OF IMPROBABLE DREAMS Addressed: Victoria , michael MENTIONED: matthew, oscar notes: olivia's over cock-blocking poor michael lol tags: Aquila Ellie Olivia had half her morning arguing with her mother about what to wear and how she was going to get to school. Back home, Olivia and Oscar didn't have a bus. School was close and buses didn't exist in London. Children walked or parents drove them. Olivia and Oscar walked. Or their father walked with them... when he did. Victoria worked at the school next over, so they drove when daddy's didn't walk with them or if it was raining. Buses were filth. Olivia loathed them.
She was dressed in plaid and white with knee-high socks and navy loafers. She looked like a schoolgirl; an English schoolgirl. It's what she didn't want to wear. In America she could wear what she warned, by her mum told her different.
The blue-eyed brunette followed her mother into the dining room blindly. She was still upset that she was dressed in her mother's attire rather than her own idea of what a seven-year-old should wear on a November day.
Her day, however, was about to turn into a lighter direction. There was food! not just any food, though, good food! Michael made way for her and her brother to scour the table for something sweet to munch on before heading to school. "We can have anything?" The girl asked, but she dug into it without waiting for an answer.
Olivia picked up a pastry and nibbled at it hungrily. She was distracted at first, but then she felt a sudden coldness. She looked up to see her mother's shadow cast over her. Standing so close, Olivia noticed how her mother had moved towards the butler.
Olivia's stomach started to burn. She packed her pastry into her blazer's pocket and wiped her tongue like she had been poisoned, all the while watching her mother and the butler 'chitchat'. Her mother smiled and there was something strange about the way she looked at him...
Olivia felt her lips curl into a snarl and she tugged on her mother's skirt to draw her attention from the butler. "Mummy, do you have a hair tie?" She asked, out of ideas on how else to take her mother's attention from the butler for more than the second she pulled at her.
"I need it braided." She added. Her body instinctually moved out in front of the two of them, and her arms crossed over her chest, looking at Michael first, her hair wagging behind her as she swayed her head from side.

Oscar never complained at the extent that his sister did. Already this morning his sister had complained about what she was forced to wear, she complained about the bus, all the while Oscar remained mute. So when they were forced to go back into the hated house his mouth formed a flat line as he mashed his lips together. They stopped by the dining room as Victoria poked her head inside. "Michael? You did all this?"Oscars mouth relaxed when he saw it was just the butler. Then his eyes widened as they locked onto the table that was set for breakfast. It was adorned with pretty pastries and delicious looking things. Oscar could smell something good cooking in the kitchen too. When Victoria gave them the signal they could go get breakfast, Oscar practically floated over to the table and stared at the croissants at eye level. He turned his head as he reached for one almost like he was silently looking to Victoria for permission that this was okay. She was preoccupied with the butler. So Oscar munched away.He didn't pay so much attention to them, but he could hear noise upstairs that warned the Quintons would be down here soon and it made him want to hurry. As he was in mid stuff into his mouth with a pastry, he glanced at Olivia who suddenly seemed to be agitated. She was glaring at the butler and Victoria, demanding her attention. Oscar followed her gaze to the adults who seemed to be talking and smiling, standing sort of close together he supposed, none of it really bothered him though. It did for Olivia apparently. His gaze fell back to Olivia as she tugged on Victoria's skirt and demanded a hair tie. Oscar rolled his eyes and returned them to the table. Maybe she didn't like the idea of someone trying to replace their dad...not that Oscar thought there was a chance he was coming back. Just as he swallowed down a piece past the knot in his throat he thought he heard mocking laughter coming from the walls. One thing he knew about Victoria, she worried a lot. About everything. He frowned at her comment that Lucille would have her on the boat back to Blackpool.
"Rubbish! You're integral to the operation of this house!" He made it sound grand and theatrical to raise her spirits again. He didn't like to see her down or upset. He turned his head for a moment to observe her children as they helped themselves to the refreshments on the table, so he was a little surprised when he turned back around to find Victoria up close to him as she reached for something behind him. He just raised his eyebrows inquisitively. She had a strawberry between her fingers and her eyes held a playful gleam as she took a bite out of it in front of him.
"Strawberries are my weakness."
His gaze involuntarily fell to her mouth as she took a bite of the fruit. It lingered a moment too long on her lips. They had always shared an easy, playful banter but this...if he didn't know any better he'd swear Victoria was flirting with him. Well, there was flirting and then there was flirting. He definitely knew the difference. His gaze slowly returned to hers, as they became aware of her youngest vying for her attention. Michael's voice dropped to a low and husky pitch.
"I'll be sure to remember that."
He glanced down at the children and then took a step aside of Victoria as others entered the room as well. He hoped he had his normal expression on his face again as he tried to focus back on work. He kept thinking about it though. She did give him the green light didn't she? LIFE IS A PILE OF GOOD THINGS AND BAD THINGS...
"Rubbish." She muttered after him. Her mouth extended in a sort of flirtatious smile that mimicked his own devilish charm. It was a futile bit of flirtation; one that Victoria reminded herself never to take further than that: futile flirtation.
A bit of fun was all she wanted, but children seemed to almost always intrude themselves into her 'fun'. Olivia was far worse than Oscar ever had been. He was a bit more timid about asking for things; while Olivia-- Olivia had no care whether or not she was being obnoxious.
Victoria stumbled to the side when her skirt was tugged by tiny hands. "Oi!" She almost knocked her daughter to the dining room floor with the intensity of her spin. "When has it ever been okay to tear at mummy's clothing?" The young mother demanded, embarrassed that her daughter lacked proper manners.
"C'mon, the both of you." Victoria swayed her hands to her side to summon the children away from the table as the Quinton's swarmed in. It wasn't seemly to have them surrounding the breakfast table meant for the honours of the house.
Her gaze rose towards Michael a last time. "Suppose we'll have to continue this later." Her tone showed no outward emotion nor did she allow herself to. Victoria brushed her hand over the top of Oscar's head and combed her fingers through his washed hair.
"Go with the Quinton's to school," Victoria reminded them. "The bus will take her back here at the end of the day. Got it?" She wasn't sure she could count of her children to take an American bus to and from one location after the fit her daughter had this morning over it, but she couldn't very well take them now that the Quintons were living at the Ramsay House.

Nikolai headed down the stairs at a normal pace until he heard his sister's voice. "I'm behind you."
He suddenly quickened his pace, running down the stairs. He couldn't help it. They giggled like children again despite their rather unusual night. The strange and scary things they experienced he put out of his mind as they practically raced each other down the stairs.
When he came to the end he put his hand on the top of the banister and jumped the last two steps. He was sure no one in the house made as much noise as them. It made him grin even more. He slowed his pace finally as they entered the Dining room. Some of the servants were there, the butler, a couple of children....a sweet ass table setup for breakfast. His entire focus was on food and so he didn't pick up on any strange atmosphere in the room before they entered. Nikolai was oblivious to most things that didn't concern him.
He picked up a croissant and started eating it and then pulled out a chair to sit down. "Do we have time to eat an actual breakfast? I'm starving....coffee?" He looked around and the butler poured him some coffee. Nikolai met the eyes of the little boy on the other side of the table. There was something kinda creepy about the kid he decided.
The boy was just staring at him with a solemn look like Nikolai was the rudest person ever. Nikolai just raised an eyebrow at the boy and took another bite out of his croissant. She had seen them kiss before, but it was different that time. Just that once; because Olivia was supposed to be long since asleep. She came down staircase because she heard an unexpected noise.
Her father was sort of silly. He said and did a lot of odd things that would earn them looks in the streets. He was very much a child himself and Olivia forgot, often, that he was supposed to be her authoritative figure. It's why when she found them kissing-- kissing the way they did, she felt funny. Like it wasn't really her father pressed up against her mother.
She had the same feeling now. The drumming in her mother's chest was the same. The shine in her dark optics were the same. But it wasn't Olivia's father that was receiving them. It was someone else. Someone different. Someone Olivia used to like.
Olivia was taken out of the scene. At least she made that funny feeling disappear. "What were you and Mr. Michael talking about?" Olivia asked once the three of them were out of earshot. Victoria wasn't listening either way. She shoved her children out of the room, out of the way of the real matters, and instantly reminded them of their new transportation arrangements.
Immediately, Olivia was shaking her head and sulking because she wasn't about to hear this all over again. Not after this morning. "I don't want to." The protested, grumbling under her breath and tucking her arms over her chest. "Can't you take us?" Olivia's mouth formed a pout. "Daddy used--"
She shut her teeth around her tongue. Squeezing the pink flesh between her ivory blades, Olivia felt the pressure bleed into her mouth. It was so fast, unthinked, and Olivia felt the skin under her eyes burn. Tears threatening to drown her cheeks.
She raised her gaze to her mother's, sweet blue meeting dark brown for what felt like an eternity of painful awkwardness. Victoria almost never talked about Matthew, and Olivia had avoided it to her best of abilities. But she failed most of the time. She missed him... She missed the fun and the laughter and the freedom he raised in their house.
Olivia trembled. Her toes curled inward as her loafers touched pseudo-leather-to-pseudo-leather. "Can I go outside, please?" Anything was better than standing there, staring at her mother and waiting for her to snap. So, Olivia didn't wait. She didn't want an answer. She just walked away and went outside to wait for the American bus, because she wouldn't complain anymore. Not ever again...
Or so she promised herself.

Elsie hadn't turned to see if her brother had followed her down the stairs. She could hear him. He was slow to meet her, but it made it out of his bedroom and down the stairs towards the smell of breakfast like the rest of the Quintons had already done.
The hazel-eyed brunette bounced into the room with her shoes and socks stitched on. She was among the first to be dressed and prepared for the rest of the day to move forward. Elsie, while nervous about school, had never had issues with it before. She was more excited than the others were, that was for certain.
She searched the hall immediately for Elliott, but saw him nowhere. Her mouth twisted into a frown and her face fell to her sudden glum mood. She had hoped to see him here first... He wasn't. But there were the older twins. Some of the staff was mucking about. Among them, the British woman with the two children not much different in age from the Quinton's. Or some of them, at least.
It was never a problem to find someone with a child a Quinton's age. Seeing how much time was between them all and how many there were. There was always someone and that someone always fit in somewhere.
Elsie took some fruit off the table behind the butler and poured herself from juice that was warming in a sweating pitcher. She munched on bacon and took something that had chocolate chips and nibbled on it until her stomach couldn't intake anymore food.
She had turned at the sound of her brother's voice. The butler moved from the assortment of breakfast foods and descended upon her bothersome brother without question. Elsie found herself feeling sorry for the staff... to have to deal with nine children was a lot, but to have to deal with Nikolai? That was the worst!
"There are nicer ways to ask for something." Elsie's voice chimed. She had tiptoed over to the chair that her brother was seated at. She leaned over his shoulder, blowing her breath over his neck, ticking his back. Little sisters were the best spies; too bad the government never gave them a chance.

ADDRESSED: MICHAEL, OSCAR MENTIONED: VICTORIA, OLIVIA, SIBLINGS NOTES: SWITCHING IT UP! AGAIN! BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE IT WAS TIME THESE TWO MET! XD TAGS: Aquila Ellie Aletheia wasn't the first and she wasn't the last Quinton to come into the hall. Scents of bacon and fresh pastries filled her nostrils as she flounced into the room with her skirt breezing behind her. She was all grace until she found the breakfast table.
Hopping over to where the food was stored, Theia took a handful of varieties for her platter. She had a handful of serviettes under her arm and a glass of milk to accompany her copious platter of pastries. Her lips touched the glass and she smiled.
This morning wasn't turning out as terrible as she expected. She was about to turn from the table, to sit with her siblings, when something inside her forced her to turn around. Meeting the butler's eye, Aletheia smiled. "Thank you." She said simply and then galloped in the other direction.
Aletheia had been uncharacteristically distracted that morning and when she walked over to the table, she had missed the other staff that was surrounding the hall. She had missed them because it was the short British woman with her two children.
The Quinton had been fooled into thinking that the random children in the hall were more Quintons. Just random siblings, stalking about, so she missed the two British children just-- standing there.
Aletheia collided with one of them and sent her right into the table. She was quick enough to save her platter of pastries and her glass of milk. Her dishes hit the table with a clatter and the twelve-year-old Quinton snapped her head to see which of her clumsy siblings had been the culprit of her stumble.
Except, she immediately realised that her anger was misplaced and it wasn't a Quinton staring back at her. Her eyes softened towards the boy and Aletheia sighed. "You really ought to watch where you're going in this house." She said plainly. Never was meant to be sarcastic or snippy, but those were the only tones Theia had in her vocabulary.

HARDSHIPS PREPARE ORDINARY PEOPLE FOR EXTRAORDINARY DESTINY
Nevaeh bounded down the stairs with an eagerness she had almost forgotten she had. The sixteen-year-old Quinton came into the dining hall without an appetite. Nevaeh had a secret, see. Secrets that made her lack of appetite make sense.
She refrained from the surrounded breakfast table and shuffled to the back of the hall to find herself a coffee mug and poured herself a little perk to help her through the day. Another perk to the one she'd have to inhale before taking her mother's car.
Mentions of the devil and there came Lucille with Elliott in her arms. She set her brother down at the entrance to the hall and came in with her robes blowing back behind her elegantly. Nevaeh often forgot how beautiful her mother was. Beautiful, but sad.
Nevaeh sipped at her coffee, cream coloured with hazelnut flavoured syrup to hide the black taste. She felt her head throb; her nose twitched and she found her brother at the far end of the room, about to be reprimanded by a five-year-old.
"Not eating?" Her mother questioned, a little brow raised as she poured her own coffee and brought it to her lips. Black.
Nevaeh shook her head and her head spun all over. "I'll eat later. Not hungry in the morning." She was a brilliant liar, but her mother was a brilliant soothe.
While Lucille looked unconvinced, her mother never asked questions when it came to Nevaeh or her notoriously snobbish twin brother. Her mother hummed a little disapproval before stalking off to find the rest of her children setting up for the first school day.
The sixteen-year-old brunette lowered her nose to the coffee mug. The steam hit her skin and she winced, shook out her head and leaned back against the frame of the wall. There was a shear mist of sunlight that ripped across the room, violating the darkness that had surrounded the rest of the house.
Nevaeh found herself coaxed into a trance as her gaze focused on that thin line of light. She thought that her gaze had fallen out of focus when all of the sudden there was a shadow at the corner of the room. It locked onto her, watching her...
The light faded as soon as the shadow came it disappeared. Nevaeh shook out her head; it hurt, then. 'I need...' Nevaeh's gaze lifted up; her eyes raised to open and she slipped out between a hidden door near the end of the kitchen.
It was a servant's hatch, she found, and Nevaeh quickly slipped a wrinkled plastic wrap from her dress pocket and poured out the contents on the serving table in front of her. She had to be quick; Nevaeh breathed in the powder of life and closed her eyes.
She felt better immediately.

As Oscar pretty much expected, the scene seemed to turn to chaos as soon as the Quinton children started to arrive. He was already ready to go by then. Oscar watched as across the table one of the older kids, a son, started helping himself and shooting orders at the butler already. He watched the interaction until the boy made eye contact with the teen. The older boy just stared at him like he was daring him to say something. Except Oscar had nothing to say.The darkness in the house gravitated toward the older children more than it did the younger ones. Maybe it was because they had more bad feelings than the young ones, Oscar wasn't sure but he stopped eating as he watched a black shadow advance and recede from the walls towards the teens. He didn't think anyone else would notice it, except maybe Olivia, but he didn't look at Olivia as his attention was focused on the darkness. The older girl teen ran from the room almost like she was in a panic and Oscar wondered if she hadn't seen it. That darkness....he could almost hear a voice coming from it again. He was suddenly bumped and the dark shadow disappeared from his vision immediately. A little bit dazed, Oscar turned to look at who bumped him and found another Quinton girl who seemed to be around his age. "You really ought to watch where you're going in this house." Oscar blinked wordlessly at her for a moment. Was she reprimanding him? Hadn't she bumped into him? Or did he step backward and bump into her? He honestly didn't know, but the girl's snippy comment made him want to not say anything but one glance at Victoria and he knew if she had been watching she'd expect him to apologize. "You're a boy, you should always apologize to a girl." He could hear her voice telling him that, or was that their father that used to say that? In any case he raised his eyes to the blond girl and spoke in a soft tone. "Oh, I'm sorry."There wasn't much else he could say at the moment, and he watched as Olivia made her way out the door like she suddenly couldn't wait to go to school. He started to move away too, there was nothing he wanted more than to leave and get out of that house as soon as possible.

First he was subjected to a reproachful gaze from some weird kid, then his youngest sister scolded him. "There are nicer ways to ask for something." He frowned, he didn't have time for this. Being judged by infants!
"That was me being nice." He made a gesture with his hand before popping the last of the croissant into his mouth. His tone was full of sarcasm. It didn't look like he was going to have time for anything else. As he glanced up he caught the moment Theia bumped into the weird kid across the table and she gave him a typical Theia snarky remark. Nikolai wanted to smirk, the boy looked lost as he regarded Theia. Nikolai almost felt sorry for the kid. He was about to make his own snarky comment when he suddenly saw Nevaeh run from the room.
He went quiet as he watched the door she went into, he couldn't see her but he knew exactly what she was doing. Geez Nevaeh, you're only a few feet away from everyone. He glanced back but thought their own mother was too distracted to notice, but their younger siblings could be pretty observant. So Nikolai did what he usually does, he tried to cover for her by distracting anyone who might be curious.
"Yeah, I gotta pee too. We're gonna be late for school. And if you guys start crying in your classrooms on your first day, I'm pretending I don't know you."

Nevaeh slid the contraband back into her possession and scratched her nails over her nose. Painted cloud blue, Nevaeh's nails now brushed hints of white, and she didn't care.
It was her brother's voice that drew her from the room. Nevaeh ducked out of the hall and into the cluster of Quintons. Most had been about their business, but Nevaeh was fortunate to have a twin that would risk his own mentions to save her hide.
Her nose crinkled and she sniffled. Nevaeh crawled out behind her brother and looked out into the hall. Her voice pressed against his ear, Nevaeh stiffened. "Don't have to cause a scene." She mumbled in defense, as if she had been offended with her brother's distraction. "No one cares about us."
Nevaeh's voice had shuttered. Whether it was true or not, Nevaeh knew at least that the other children or their mother for that matter paid much attention to what her and Nikolai ever did. Why should they now?
"C'mon," Her voice confident. Changed from her direct defense. "I'm going to try and snatch Lucille's keys before she notices. Screw the bus." Her head quirked to the side and a smirk dangled on her mouth. She felt that familiar mischievousness making it's return.

A K I L A Akila's stomach was in knots now. His fear of starting a new school day seemed like a minor thing after his nightmares. Seeing your dead father in pain and begging for him to either help him or leave the new house was traumatizing enough that Akila was seriously considering faking illness for the sake of not having to deal with school. He huffed as he slouched into the dining room, just passing the older twins and frowning at his sister. Something was up with her that he couldn't quite put his finger on. It wasn't his business, but that didn't stop him from being worried for her. Bullies the older twins may be, but they were still his family and they had a handful of good moments.
It also dawned upon Akila as he was getting into his chair and grabbing a bit of toast and jam that Juliana would know the second he opened his mouth that he would be lying about being sick. She was scary like that, Juliana was. He glanced at Elsie and Thea, who was chewing out the one resident kid... Oscar he thought his name was. Poor thing. He had no idea how snarly Thea could get. Akila normally ducked her if he could. Not that he didn't like her, but her stand-off personality and quirks made him uncomfortable.
He spread jam on his toast and tried to ignore the heated discussions. He scowled after Nikolai when his older brother made a comment about them all crying on their first day. How rude. Akila harrumphed and finished his toast, just so something was in his stomach. He then swallowed some orange juice and declared himself done with his breakfast. He hopped down from his chair and grabbed his backpack. It was dark blue and had his name sewn in on it courtesy of Juliana. He shouldered it then hunched over by the door, waiting for the others and just altogether staying out of sight.

She remembered seeing him with the short one-- the big-eyed brunette with the funny nose. Victoria! that's what she heard her called before.
When he finally did open his mouth, his voice was soft. Almost too soft for her understand. Not to mention, he seemed timid. Like he was waiting for her to hit him or something. Theia felt bad, but only for a second, because that wasn't Theia. She didn't feel bad for being... her.
Her nose crinkled downward and found her head falling one to one side, with a look that made her seem confused or questioning. "Didn't say you had to whisper." Her voice hadn't changed. It was still as snarky and mean as it had been before despite her pretty neutral opinion.
"If your mom is having you take the bus from here, you're gonna wanna get out there now or you'll be stuck in a seat of three." Still, her voice didn't change. Theia just shrugged her shoulders and dismissed the thought as if it hadn't meant anything. "Trust me. I know buses."

Oscar didn't know what to make of this Quinton girl. He was a poor judge of other children. Was she being mean? Or was this just how she normally was? She was looking at him like he was weird. He supposed that was normal though. Everyone thought he was weird. "Didn't say you had to whisper." She admonished him and Oscar blinked. "Sorry...I don't like to be loud." A strange comment for a strange little boy. He looked up at the ceiling as he spoke the words. He didn't like to draw attention to himself, but it was not other people he wanted to avoid. He wanted the house to overlook him, but even now the walls seemed to whisper his name."If your mom is having you take the bus from here, you're gonna wanna get out there now or you'll be stuck in a seat of three. Trust me I know buses." Oscar just nodded, heeding the girl's advice. He looked around once and realized Victoria was no longer there. "Oh, I should go find my sister. I think she's outside alone."No sooner than he uttered the sentence, he heard a familiar scream from outside. "That's Olivia." He started to rush to the door when he was confronted with one extremely dirty and overly excited border collie. Oscar stopped and stared at the dog. The dog was wagging it's tail so hard it's whole body was shaking back and forth. A smile as bright as the sun broke out over Oscar's face. It was as rare as the rarest jewel. Unlike his sister, Oscar loved dogs. He reached out and patted the dog's head as the canine's tongue hung out of her mouth and she looked at Oscar with adoring eyes. "Hi there. Where did you come from?" Oscar was still smiling until he almost forgot about his sister screaming. After threatening the oldest children with forcing them to do yard work for a whole month, Juliana stalked down the steps to check on the children in the dining room. Not surprisingly, a little chaos had ensued. The Quinton children were excellent at doing so, as Juliana knew very well. She snatched a piece of toast and bit into it before gathering backpacks and lunches. She made sure they were packed then checked on Akila.
The second youngest boy looked depressed and down, so Juliana knelt in front of him and spoke with him for a short while. She was good at getting people to talk, both children and adults. Akila confessed about nightmares and a fear for the house. Julia grimaced because she felt a weird vibe about the house as well. In the end, she tells Akila to try and stay strong in school, and they would talk with Lucille later about his fears and night terrors.
She leaves Akila to round up the rest of them. "Alright, get a move on! The bus will be at the curb any minute. Grab your backpacks, and don't forget your lunches and books. I'm not going to bring you anything if you forget it." She frowned when she noticed the diabolical twins were missing from her eyesight. She spotted them skulking away from the younger ones and narrowed her eyes.
"If you miss the bus, you're walking," she told them, folding her arms and tapping her foot. "Now get a wiggle on." She gently coaxed the children into gathering by the front door so that they all could walk to the bus stop together. They would be safest in a pack. She would take them, obviously, but she wanted them to get into a habit of relying on one another. She noticed Akila set his jaw and stand by Elsie and Theia, attempting, Julia thought, to shake off his fears.
She looked back and noticed one of Victoria's children, Oscar, patting a dirty Aurora. She grimaced as the trail the dog was leading into the house. Oh, dear. "Oscar, are you leaving with us?" she called to him. "We're going to be late, sweetie." This would be her life for a while. Lovely. She felt like a shepherd attempting to gather her loud and rambunctious sheep.

"the fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose"
If Juliana had initiated the scatter, Lucille would've forgotten all about the bus. She set her coffee on the table and followed the commotion as the children started for the door. She ran for the hall where all their backpacks were sitting on the floor.
She had wanted to be the one to make the transition easier so backpacks set out for a quick start was what she had managed to do. Lucille was never the one to ready them for school. That had been their father's thing. While she sipped her coffee and talked with their neighbour, who had often come over, Michael was ushering the kids out the door.
Lucille brushed past Juliana. "I can make sure they get to the bus." Her manner was a bit frazzled, but she was determined to show the nanny that she would also take care of her own children. "Why don't you see if you can find that..." She drew a blank. "Um, one of the managers. There are a few things I'd like to go over with them." And just as she was about to leave, she turned back and added: "Please."
The mother of nine rushed after the herd of children that had mostly beat her to the door. Her hand fell on Elliott's shoulder as he came running through. In the hall, she was able to get them their backpacks, straighten their shirts and comb their hair back behind their ears.
She followed them outside, tried to make sure that each one of them got a hug or kiss before she ushered them onto the bus. The little ones were the only ones to take that affection with enthusiasm. The older her children got, the harder it was to find that connection with them.
Between all of the chaos, Lucille hadn't counted heads. She hadn't even noticed that not everyone was on the bus as it drove down the lane and towards the hill where the schools were founded next to each other, where her children would spend the next eight hours without her.
The house was quiet.

He was a part of the shadows, which gave him an edge above other spirits. True, every spirit was no longer truly alive nor truly... well, they were dead. They were usually imprints of their former, living selves. Max was different. His essence had not been laid to rest peacefully. He had died with a lot of rage and greed in his already black heart. Years of being overshadowed by his older brother had left him jealous and bitter. Even after he died and Max took over the family business and home, he had never been satisfied. His bed had been warmed by hundreds of people thirsting for attention themselves. Even with some of his most epic shags, he hadn't been satisfied with his life long.
Max watched the grieving widow settle into her own broken sense of peace with her children safely off to school. Well, most of them. A couple were getting ready to hijack one of the cars outside. He so dearly hoped they managed it and caused a little chaos. They had been here not even a day, and they were proving to have potential... but were so far boring. With the exception of that little nanny finding her crush necking it with one of the other household staff, things had been boring, anyway. The spirits here weren't great at scaring on purpose. They were mostly bitter and resentful they couldn't move on to the next life or the light or whatever they believed in. It was all nonsense as far as Max was concerned.
What he cared about now was spreading his own chaos and fear to feed off of. When he had enough, he would kill them... or drive them off if they got away. Whichever.
Max followed Lucille to the door and narrowed his eyes before flexing his neck. He couldn't do a whole lot right now, but he had some energy to cause trouble. He sent an icy aura at her so that she would feel unexplainably cold. Georgia was almost always warm, one of the reasons Max had hated it. At least it rained in England.
He then flexed his hand, his nails sharpening into claws. He would be his beast in a day or so, but for now, he dealt with semi-transformations. He slashed the wall beside the staircase, leaving three deep gouges. Maybe he should've tried doing that to her back, but maybe she needed to be properly terrified first... or in her bed. That was when people were most vulnerable - while sleeping.

"the fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose"
Lucille waved her children off, and returned to the hall where breakfast was still waiting out for her. She hadn't had a chance to find something to nibble on, so she took advantage of the time she had to herself. Before her children came home and before she started to work on renovations for the house, Lucille had a few small ideas of how to spend the next few minutes.
She fixed herself a cup of coffee, and pinched off a crumb from a biscuit to taste. Biscuits weren't as popular in the north as they were in Georgia. Lucille hummed her approval and took another pinch off the end. She silently cursed herself for going towards the carbs rather than something more substantial.
Taking her coffee with her, Lucille started towards the door only to have a rush of cold air breeze through her. She took a deep breath and closed her teeth together. It was harsh enough to chill her coffee to room temperature, but it was still warm on her hands.
"Jesus. Add that to the list of renovations." Lucille muttered to herself and took a sip of the warm coffee.
When she worked her way out of the cold spot and towards the hall, another unsettling miss took over her senses. This time it wasn't her flesh that suffered, but her ears.
Her gaze drifted slowly from the oblivion and found them at the scratched bled into the walls. She should've been terrified. She should've run. But she wasn't scared. She approached the gashes with a slow step, touched her fingers to the claws and followed the line down the wall.
"Careful, darlin'." The voice came to her like mist, floating into her ears and settling in her brain. "He's watching." It rested there and froze her senses.
Lucille let her gaze fall from the wall. "He?" Glancing behind her, however, the mother of nine saw nothing except an empty staircase. Quiet filled the room again.

Max watched with vague interest as the mother simply took the claw marks as another flaw in the old house she had just purchased. How annoying when his victims were dimwitted. Or just in denial. Only the superstitious seemed convinced ghosts were real and not just stories told to frighten children. Just one hundred years ago, people believed their loved one's departed souls stayed by their side and either caused misery or protected them.
Nowadays, people were less suspicious because their science and tools drew inconclusive results. Supernatural energy that ghosts radiated tended to mess with their electronics. Max himself had shorted out several televisions in his time. Phones were more fun to manipulate because he could project his voice through the lines. That had been a great time.
Max huffed and watched with slight amusement as one of the spirits, Eleanor, talked to the new owner of the Ramsey house. A warning. How quaint.
He growled and circled the living woman like a wolf with his cornered prey. How he wished he was at full strength so he could tear into her - watch her flesh get sliced up into ribbons and weep crimson all over the floorboards. He longed to bite, but he could not consume flesh or blood. He could only take in energy and use it to fuel his twisted soul.
"The master of the house," came another voice.
Max narrowed his eyes as Richard, one of his descendants, circled close. He hadn't died in this room, so his spirit was not as solidified here, but he seemed to be able to form enough to speak to the living. How interesting.
"Do not anger him," Richard whispered, his voice faint like a bad radio connection. "Your children are not safe. Go before-"
Max snarled, his eyes blazing with fury. He swiped at Richard's barely formed spirit, but it was already gone, probably to hide in the library where he had spent so much time in life. Because of his loss of control, Max was semi-visible for a moment as he struck out at Richard, but he quickly recovered and took off up the stairs to pace around the dusty ballroom. He usually stayed in there where he died or in his old study that he had taken from his brother and father.
"You will not take my victims away," he snarled at no one in particular. The spirits knew he could not touch them, not when he was weakened like this. He needed the people afraid and wary but not so utterly spooked that they would flee before he could absorb their terror and take their lives.
Max placed a hand on the ancient wall, the paper long faded and even peeling a little. He bowed his head, lost in memories his spirit clung to: his nights in the office, dancing with dozens of eligible women and even a few men. If he thought hard enough, he could remember their expensive scents and feel their living flesh giving way under his hands. His bed had been shared by many of lovers, even when he was married.
His brother's death was a memory he could never shake for the house would not let him forget his sins. The howling at night that came from the woods haunted Max and kept him from truly relaxing, even though ghosts don't sleep. They simply are.
His wife's death was just behind his brother's. Almost every night, he heard her screams as she toppled down the grand staircase... later came the dripping of her blood as it cascaded down the stairs and formed red splotches like poppies on a white field. Her glassy eyes staring at him - empty and without feeling.
He struck, but the old wall was not to be harmed by his depleted energy. Small bursts were all he could manage for now. Max made a frustrated sound no living being could hear and leaned against the wall, staring at the dusty windows without really seeing beyond. He would return to his full strength if he had to kill everyone in this house.

"the fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose"
Lucille heard the voices around her head, but lacked the capacity to assume they had come from anywhere but there-- her head.
Her skin had grown tired and Lucille's pushed the flesh of her cheeks upward as she rubbed the sensitive skin underneath her opticals. Her gaze lowered and closed in an effort to rest against the stress that plagued her. "I'm crazy... this is crazy." She muttered into the fist of her hand.
Lucille had been the brink of tears since arriving in Newton; and she had done little to prevent them from breaking through. Lucille wished for some assurance. It was a vacuous effort. The more she tried to push it all down, the worse she felt.
The voices around her had wrestled enough with one another and finally quieted down. It was a low growl and a small feminine voice that still peaked through the haze.
"Come on, darling. Don't let the big bad wolf frighten you." The voice, while sweet in demeanour, was taunting and demanding from her something she couldn't deliver.
Lucille's head fell against the wall closest to her and she balled her fists against the wall. "Shush! Just shut up!" She growled back at the voice and the monster that snipped in her ear. It was the worst headache she had had in such a long time.
Her headaches were getting worse.
