She was only child of Keith and Karen Holmes and an absolute treasure to her parents. In 1998 Victoria’s elderly neighbour died. Three months later the house was once again full of laughter and the smell of warm cookies. The Graham’s were a small family; a father, a mother, and their son… Arthur. Victoria had just turned four; Arthur was a whole year older than she was, but nevertheless they were instant best friends. Arthur would wait every morning outside her house so they could walk to school together and he’d wait every day outside her classroom so they could walk home together. He held her hand when crossing the street and kissed her cuts and scraps when she fell on the pavement. Arthur was like the older brother she never had. And Victoria was the little sister he never got.
In the fall of 2000, Victoria and Arthur left the schoolyard to go to the castle across the street after school. Victoria neglected to tell her parents where she was going and when she didn’t come home that night Keith and Karen went looking for her. It took them two hours, but they found Victoria fast asleep in the castle gardens. Arthur was sitting next to her with an astronomy book in his hands. When asked why Arthur hadn’t come home or told Victoria's parents where they were, he told Mr. and Mrs. Holmes that he didn’t want to leave Victoria alone and he wouldn’t dare wake her up. She was too "peaceful" to arouse from slumber.
From the moment Arthur moved in, he and Victoria were inseparable. For two single children it was like having an adopted sibling. Their bond was unlike any other. From the time they were four and five they never spent an entire day apart.

By the time they were in high school, Arthur and Victoria had already learned all there was to know about each other… or so Arthur had Victoria believing. Arthur came from a long line of London witches. His family left their coven after an incident a few months before they moved next door to Victoria’s family. Arthur was only five when he moved away from the coven and was never given the chance to understand the extent of his family’s power.
Victoria was fifteen when Arthur fell off the grid. His parents finally filled him on their past, which left Victoria in the dark. Over the next few weeks, Arthur was distant. He stopped telling her things. He stopped walking her to school. He went home early to avoid walking her home. One afternoon, Victoria knocked on his door. He didn’t answer, but his parents did and told her he didn’t want to talk to anyone. By that point, Victoria was worried.
She waited until Arthur’s parents had gone to sleep and then she snuck into their garden and walked around the back and knocked on Arthur’s first story bedroom window. She waited outside for ten minutes until Arthur finally opened the window and invited her inside. They sat down all night and Arthur came clean about his family, fully knowing that he was putting himself and her in danger by sharing his secret; but Arthur and Victoria had never kept secrets. He couldn’t keep his biggest secret from his best friend.
x Chapter Four :: Different Worlds x
It was hard at first, but Victoria learned to accept the new world. Arthur practiced magic freely in front of her; she was amazed by the things he could accomplish. It was like he was the real life ‘Harry Potter’. She was in love with magic and all it could accomplish. She often joked about waiting for his acceptance letter to Hogwarts, which he found less amusing than she.
Victoria followed Arthur to his college of choice. They were close to home which was a relief and they continued to walk home every day after class together. When Victoria was nineteen her mother got sick. She was diagnosed with stage four cancer and lost the battle almost a year later. Part of Victoria’s spirit (her lively spunk) died with her mother. Arthur had been practicing magic the night before in the castle. He had predicted her mothers death with an accidental spell, but never shared his findings with Victoria. If she had known it would’ve explained the awkward hug he gave her at the end of the night; the one where he held her so tightly she couldn’t breathe.
x Chapter Five :: Moving On x
However supportive Victoria had been to Arthur it was never enough. He wanted to find others like him and, well, Victoria wasn’t one of them. He did, however, drag her along to all the meetings and conventions that he deemed safe and appropriate. He misjudged an invitation from an ancient coven south of Blackpool. Victoria tagged along, as she usually did, and kept her distance (playing shy witch) as Arthur demonstrated his powers to the coven. This invitation, however, was different than any of the others they had been sent. It was in Russia…
They took a train to Paris and flew out the following morning. They ended up in a backwards witch village on the edge of the water. The coven was very interested in Victoria, sensing immediately that she was a human. What Arthur neglected to research when looking at this coven’s history was their ancient practices. Victoria as a human girl and a virgin was mistaken as an offering. She was put in a prison cell underground and it took Arthur two days to get her out. She never knew how and she never asked. She was just happy to have her life. They fled from Russia and returned to their happy town: Blackpool, United Kingdom.
After the debacle in Russia, Andrew was hopeless until he heard about a place in America. When he told Victoria of his findings she was apprehensive, but encouraged him to go to America anyways. She expected that to be it. He would leave and she would be forced to move on. And then he invited her to come along. She wasn’t thrilled about leaving her father alone in that empty house or moving across the Atlantic, but she also knew she had seen too much to go back to her boring human life so she followed Arthur to America and she’s been struggling to survive there ever since.
