x Chapter One :: Life Before the Wreck x
Ece remembers very little of her life before her parents death. She was five years old when the accident happened and remembered very little about them before that time. She knew of stories that Sevi would tell her, but didn’t have any ‘real’ memories of her own. She was told that her mother was a fantastic cook and kind caretaker; that her father was stoic and distance, but cared in his own unique way. Even at a young age, Ece showed signs of depression. Her father, she was told, had similar problems that led to his alcoholism and violent nature. However, most of their uncles were the same way, so nothing unusual was ever thought of it. Ece’s mental health was neglected from the very beginning.
x Chapter Two :: Coming Of Age x

x Chapter Two :: Coming Of Age x
Ece was two years younger than Selma and two years older than Dilara. She was too young to be running around with her teenage sisters and too old to be playing kickball and ‘imaginary life’ with Dilara and Lale. She desperately wanted to be part of her teenage sisters exciting lives, but Sevi and Selma were not thrilled about ‘babysitting’ their adolescent sister. However, that didn’t mean that she didn’t spend time with her sisters. Sevi, Selma, Dilara, Lale, and Ece would take time out of their week to spend together. They took longer routes to school so they could all talk and catch up on the gossip from that weekend. They would go to the lemonade shop in town after school on hot days and sit on the beach when no one was around. Ece and her sisters had a lot of freedoms compared to the conservative minds of their village.
When Sevi found a boyfriend she spent more time out of the house and less time with them. It was around that same time that Selma and Ece’s bond was strengthened. And while Sevi was off with Ekin, Ece was with their aunt, Perri, learning the French and English language with her sister Selma. It was because of their enthusiasm that Perri invited all five Sadik sisters to America. Sevi started keeping a ‘vlog’ of all their trips to Disney and New York City. Ece was put in charge of the editing.
x Chapter Two :: ‘Lets Walk’ x
Ece and the oldest of the sisters were standing outside of the school, waiting for Lale. She came sulking out of the school with tears streaming down her cheeks. Ece was among her sisters in teasing and poking fun at their ‘sad’ little sister; that was the day her favourite teacher was leaving for Istanbul. Ece brushed the hair from her sisters face and puffed out her cheeks in a mocking pout, “you’re so sad”. She teased.
Sevi made the choice to walk. She led the sisters to the beach with some of the village boys. Ece thought nothing of it. She fought with Lale over the ‘chicken fight’; the little girl was claiming she cheated. Ece yelled at her, calling her a liar and then Sevi started yelling at Ece. They were playing a game and fighting as they usually did.
One of the village boys suggested they go to an orchard in the country. Ece knew the man who owned the orchard and knew he would not be pleased if he found them trespassing which only made her more eager to go. She bounced eagerly behind the boys with her sisters to steal some sour apples from the trees.
By the time they got home it was nearly supper. Sevi tripped coming through the front door, creating a clatter that arose tons of laughter from all five girls. But their laughter was halted by the threatening presence of their grandmother or ‘Baba’. She pulled the girls upstairs, hitting them with the switch for a ‘sin’ they hadn’t realised they committed. Trying to protect each other from the harsh sting of the switch, the girls fought their Baba with all their combined strength until she told them what awful thing they had done to deserve the switch. ‘Pleasuring themselves on boys necks’ she said. They protested, explaining it was only a game; but it only made her more angry.
They were no longer children. They were women.
x Chapter Four :: Wife Factory x
Ece and her sisters were confined to the house. Their once free-home became a prison, a wife factory. Ece watched as her sisters were paired, awaiting for the inevitable day that it too would become her burden. She resented her fate and when Selma and Sevi were paired she feared the worst.
Lale once wrote in her diary, “When it was Ece’s turn she began acting dangerously.” Ece watched from a distance as her sisters prepared for marriage. Sevi was overjoyed at the prospect of marrying her first love, while Selma shrunk into her protective shell and became more and more reserved. Wanting to decide her own fate, but unable to, Ece found her own peace by indulging in sweets and detaching herself from her sisters.
“If you continue eating like that you’ll end up a fat cow at your ending,” Dilara warned. It only made Ece want to stuff more cakes down her throat.
x Chapter Five :: Yes, Uncle x
WARNING: scenes of rape and sexual assault in the following chapter
It started when Selma got engaged. Sevi and Selma were staying in their own room, leaving Ece by her lonesome. She woke up one night at the sound of a belt being thrown into the air. A shadow was casted over the her head. Ece’s eyes blurred together to reveal a drunken Erol at her door. She sat straight up in her bed, “what are you doing?” She demanded. He said nothing, moving closer to the bed. Ece pulled the sheets up to her chest and asked again, “what are you doing?”
Leaning over the bed, gently crawling over to meet Ece’s face. She could smell the whiskey on his breath and the stench of cigar on his clothing. He was red and covered in cold sweat, probably from being so drunk. He wobbled over her, finally having crawled his way on top of the bed completely. Ece froze. She couldn’t move. She couldn’t scream. “Lale! Dilara!” She cried out in her head, but every time she opened her mouth only tiny fractured chirps escaped her lips.
This became a nightly occurrence. Ece was too afraid to say anything, but she didn’t have to. Baba knew. She found Erol one night creeping out of her room. She scolded him, but did nothing more. She protected her son as most women did in their village.
x Chapter Six :: Avoiding Fate x
Two days before Sevi and Selma’s wedding, Ece met was called into the living room. Baba and Erol found a match for her. She was ordered to serve the tea and biscuits. It wasn’t as formal as Sevi and Selma’s arrangements has been. Ece was forced to wear ‘shit-coloured’ clothing. She was preparing the tea and biscuits in the kitchen when Lale came in, topping her feet and demanding that Ece tell them to leave.
Ece simply ignored her, which only aggravated Lale more. She pushed Ece out of the way and spit into the teacups, threw the biscuits onto the floor. “Lale, get out!” Ece tried to remain calm, but her little sister was going to get her into trouble.
“Tell them to go!” She cried. Ece shook her head, picked up her little sister and threw her out of the kitchen, locking the door behind her. She did serve the bastards in her kitchen the spit tea and the floor biscuits. It was her own quiet way of revenge.
“Women must be chaste and pure,
know their limits, and mustn’t laugh openly in public,
or be proactive with every move.”
That was the ringing voice on the radio as they ate their dinner. Ece made her choice then and there. She would not attend her wedding and she would not attend her sisters weddings either. She made a scene, forcing her Baba and uncle to excuse her from the table. When she left she slipped quietly into her room, locked the door, and found one of Sevi’s razors. She had punctured the skin, but she wouldn’t get any farther.
“Ece!” Lale came through the side door that connected the two rooms. “Ece, stop it! Stop it!” Lale jumped on her sister, pulling the razor from her hands and started to cry. Ece returned those tears and the two of them lay on the floor, curled up in one another’s arms until Sevi and Selma discovered them minutes later and reported it to their Baba. Ece was then sent to the hospital and her sisters weren’t allowed to visit.
One week after the riots and one day before her sisters wedding, Ece was checked out of the hospital and sent home. Sevi filled her in on their plan to escape Turkey. She was still shaken up from the horrifying discovery on the day of the riot and Ece was nowhere near recovered from her failed attempt at suicide. The timing was awful, but they had no other choice.
The night of the wedding, the sisters packed their bags and left, avoiding fate.
x Chapter Eight :: The Promised Land x
The initial plan was to find their liberal aunt and live with her, but the search for her was close to impossible. Until then, Sevi found them a place to live where they could learn their ‘ancestry’ and Ece could heal. In America, Ece connected with Lale more than anyone else. There was an unspoken secret, a bond that they formed when Lale found Ece on the verge of passing out. Now, Ece was only trying to fake a smile and not worry her sisters as they transitioned into their American lifestyle.
Things shifted when Selma died. Ece found herself slipping back into her old habits. Refusing to deal with the death of her sister, Ece turned to hurting herself and abusing alcohol as her uncle had before her. Coping was never Ece's strong suit, but without Selma to keep her from making the mistakes, Ece continued to make them.
