PART ONE :: BORN INTO IT
“We’re carved from the very bones of the immortal Eve,” her father had told her every night before he’d tuck her into bed and kiss her goodnight. Eve is one of the most important figures in the magical world. While The Bible paints her as a foolish woman who lured her husband into committing the first original sin due to a devilish encounter with a menacing serpent, Eve is a well respected figure in the supernatural community. After she removed the veil of innocence, a bloom of power pressed against the earth and soaked into the water of the garden and into the veins of the sinner. This idea was poured into Devona BelRose’s psyche. It defined the way she viewed herself and her coven and the world. It was roaring factor in every decision she was forced to make. The Regents have two equally important roles within the coven:
Number One. Protect the Coven.
Number Two. Teach the Heir How to be the Next Regent.
It was a huge amount of pressure placed on any child of only six. When Devona should’ve been worrying about her multiplication tables, the young witch was stressing over keeping herparent’s coven. Her parent’s duties were about to become her own. Named by her grandmother, meaning ‘protector’, Devona was given extreme influence in a highly populated community from the moment she was able to utter coherent phrases. Growing up in a community that worshiped and relied on her, being able to bend wind and start fires with a snap of the fingers would give anyone a swollen head and for the spoiled six-year-old that meant that the whole world was at her disposal. But she was still a girl… a girl driven by power… a girl driven by love… a girl driven by curiosity.
When Devona turned thirteen the tables started to turn. Her ‘teachings’ became all-consuming. She was under constant pressure to make the right choices for a coven she didn’t even fully understand. She was a teenager… a teenager desperate to get out, desperate to skip ahead to where this whole ruling thing was ‘easy’. That’s all she wanted. All she wanted was for it to be easy. She never meant to exterminate a thousand-year-old witch clan.
PART TWO :: THE LEATHER BOOK AND THE BLUE FIRE
Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" And the woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate." Genesis 3:9-13.
The serpent in this vivid series was no wild stranger, but a familiar face in the morning mirror. Devona was tired of being trapped in the coven library for thirteen hours of the day. She was given no time to make friends or alliances. She was trapped in the house, revolving endlessly around the coven's every need. Devona meant 'protector'. Protector of the coven, but not of herself. Her 'forward-thinking' and ambitious teenager behaviour put her at a disadvantage and Devona went rummaging through the coven for the most impressionable members of her youth. Some were 'friends'. Some were eager witches looking to have an in with the future Regent. Either way it was working in her favour. Her hope... all she wanted was to skip ahead-- fast forward to the easy timeline of her regency.
It wasn't impossible. At least that's what He said. The boy with all the cryptic books. He was an 'odd ball' in the coven, a boy that no one ever wanted to get to know. He believed in the 'Old Magic', but it wasn't just that. It was ancient Old Magic. He was obsessed with the origins of dark magic and had a soft spot for the murdered of Salem. He promised Devona that he had a way for her to 'skip ahead'-- to 'fast forward to the easy parts'. All it required was a bit of reading and a simple prayer. He promised it would work. It did.
Given to her was a single black leather book that contained nothing but empty pages. The giver of this special book promised that the shortcuts would be revealed to her soon enough when the spirits thought that she was ready. It was a lot of responsibility, he told her, and she would have to be prepared for the consequences that came with that responsibility. Devona had accepted the responsibility of the coven and the responsibility of the craft that adding to her list of responsibilities didn't seem like a burden... at the time. So, Devona studied and worked and when the book revealed itself to her she thought she was ready.
One the seventh day of her 'studying', Devona was given a task direct to her by the book. It was an easy-cast spell. She was asked to perform it in front of the spell during the ceremony of the ancestors, a sacrificial meeting held every year by the heads of the witch community to honour the ancestors of their coven and covens before. The spell was a power draw. Whatever that meant.
PART THREE :: DEAD AND ALIVE, ALL IN ONE
The spell drained the life out of almost everyone in the coven. It slaughtered the Regent and his wife, his surviving relatives and the some of the most powerful families in the coven. It washed the blood from their veins and drowned them in black tar and fires roared over the cemetery without signs of stopping. The coven's legacy was ash and the ancestors were not pleased. Once news flood into the afterlife, the ancestors rose to the earth for one more trial case in their realm. Devona was charged with one year in the 'other side' for the ancestors to do with as the please.
One year in the 'other side' was like five in the real world. Devona suffered through her punishment while her coven moved on. The BelRose Regime was forced to move on from the tragedy and find a new Regent to fill her place. For when she would return she would not be given a place in their regency. The horrors faced in the afterlife would never be remembered by the sixteen-year-old beauty queen. Devona woke up one year later in a field of golden grass in a dress of silky white. She didn't recognise the ground underneath her nor the feeling of the sun on her face. Everything was bright and unwelcoming... but yet familiar. She knew her name: Devona. She knew her gender: female. She knew her age: sixteen. What else? Nothing... Absolutely nothing.
