J U L I A N A
After having a hearty breakfast, the nanny walked around and did a sweep of the dining room area to make certain that all of the kids had remembered their bags, books, and lunches. Heaven forbid they get calls on the first day of school about forgotten things. Were the phones even connected at the moment? She didn't know; it wasn't like they had a full staff to tale care of every whim and obstacle. Then again... what if some kind of emergency arose? That wouldn't be good. She would have to ask Lucille about their phone lines later.
Juliana proceeded up the stairs, exploring the home and peeking into rooms that were sort of open. Bedrooms that looked unoccupied she explored for a bit, checking out the dusty old relics left behind years ago. She found portraits thick with dust, and she was pretty sure the number of spiders calling this place home had been in charge of decorating while humans were away; cobwebs coated most of the surfaces and parts of the ceiling and lights. The whole appearance was creepy and unsettling, but Juliana also found it sad that this old house had fallen into this state. Sure, some rooms had been revived and renovated, but others were left abandoned and unloved. Maybe that would be another thing she asked Lucille: if she, Juliana, could help with the cleaning while the children were at school. It would give her something to do other than mope around.
The little blonde was halfway down the hall when she felt a chill down her spine as if someone had dropped an ice cube down the back of her shirt. She swallowed and looked over her shoulder. The hallway was dimly lit, so she could only see so far, but she could've sworn it had gotten darker in the last few minutes.
Juliana touched a pendant around her neck. It was a silver with three elongated ovals touching inside a circle. The symbol was called a triquetra, and it was a symbol of protection. She held it nervously as she crept down the hall, her heart hammering a tattoo against her ribs. Maybe she should turn around and leave or at least call for help. But curiosity got the better of her. Something was wrong with this house, and she wanted to get to the bottom of it for the sake of the family she was hired to care for. It had been a few years now, and in all intense and purposes, they were her family. She would do anything for those kids.
She stopped outside of a door that looked imposing. She lightly touched the aged wood, wondering what secrets it held behind it. She touched the knob, but it was locked. She huffed in frustration and turned on her heel, ready to leave.
A sharp creek behind her had her whipping around and staring in shock at the now open door. Juliana thought it over for about two seconds before stalking into the now open room.
The space was incredible. If she were to make a noise, it would echo throughout the dusty room. Her eyes took in the curtains, which were closed. Only sunlight making a valiant effort to penetrate through was illuminating the room. Juliana moved forward, her footsteps echoing faintly as she took in the room. It clearly hadn't made it on the list for renovations, and the nanny also wondered who had decided this room was off-limits. Had it been the renovators or... something else?
Her grey eyes took in the room, trying to picture people decades, or even centuries ago, dancing and having a good ol' time here. The gowns would've been magnificent, the music would've been enchanting on a live orchestra...
She swayed on the spot, able to see in her mind's eye the gorgeous costumes and hear the slow waltz as couples danced the night away...
A low growl was like an icy shower on her warm daydream. The nanny turned her head, searching frantically for the source of the terrifying sound. Juliana, who had a fear of dogs, knew what they sounded like. Whatever made that noise was much bigger and much angrier.
Juliana looked towards the grand fireplace, which must've once been impressive before dust and cobwebs coated it. The sound was coming from there. As she was starting to believe she had just imagined the noise, a pair of gleaming red eyes appeared beside the cold hearth. The eyes were definitely on a level with hers, making the beast there larger than any dog ever born. The growl started again, and Julia felt as if an icy hand had seized her throat and squeezed, preventing her from uttering a cry of panic. The temperature in the room had dropped at least ten degrees, and now Juliana was very much regretting her little adventure.
Suddenly, a fire erupted in the hearth, burning as if it been there for hours. Juliana winced as the sudden light stabbed her in the eyes. Her legs unlocked and she scrambled back as exactly what was near the fireplace was brought into sharp relief.
A great black wolf with ragged fur was crouching near the flames, its ears forward and focused entirely on her. The eyes weren't blinking, and she could swear the muzzle was quivering just before the lips pulled back revealing the biggest goddamn teeth she had ever seen on any animal.
That's when her throat opened up, and Juliana let out a hair-raising scream.

LIFE IS A PILE OF GOOD THINGS AND BAD THINGS...
It was like something out of the movies, as if Victoria could see the hand reaching out of the shadows to snatch her into the cold. She turned suddenly as the piercing sound of a violent scream erupting through the house. It started as a monster in the walls, and then muffled behind the dusty furniture and rubbed carpets.
Victoria had ignored her own terror in the abandoned room, and found herself charging up the stairs towards an unknown scream. She was surprised and confused to find the room that they had tried and failed at opened was breathing light.
The Englishwoman followed the stream of lighthearted orange into the ballroom, flourished a brilliant light as if preparing itself for a party no one had been invited to. Her eyes drifted downwards to the floor where the white-haired nanny was trembling on her back.
The room dimmed suddenly as the fire burned out in the fireplace across the hall. "Juliana?" Victoria knelt before the nanny; her head bowed in some sort of respect as she felt as if Lucille was somewhere watching her. "Are you all right? What-- what happened?"
Victoria almost felt bold enough to touch her; but refrained last minute. Her hands fell to her knees, and her form lowered to the floor. She wasn't sure what Juliana was looking at, but Victoria gestured her gaze in that direction only to find that the room was still empty.
