His teasing brought some smiles from the ladies which was his intention, but it was Victoria's slightly teasing return of that banter that had his eyebrows raising with surprise. She rarely let her guard down, especially with others around but it vanished in an instant after her youngest spoke rudely to the nanny.
"Seems my children have had enough interaction for the day." He gave a sympathetic look to Victoria, she was trying her best to balance the demands of her job and take care of her children and he figured she must be as exhausted as the children were. "Yes, I'm sure these little urchins are all over tired." As he glanced down at the children, Victoria's son Oscar had stumbled a bit as he came off of his chair. For a moment Michael thought he might fall and so he reached out a hand to steady the boy.
His hand landed on his head, and the small face lifted to meet his gaze with surprise. Michael gave him a light pat and withdrew his hand. He wasn't sure if the boy liked being touched, he seemed to be off in his own world at times. So, he just smiled at the boy and then cleared his throat and looked back to Victoria and the others.
"Don't worry about this....I'll take care of it." He gestured at the plates and dirty dishes they left on the table. He rested a hand on the table and leaned one hip against the edge. He gave a smile to everyone but again his gaze eventually landed on Victoria. She had a half grateful half regretful look on her face before she let her gaze drop and she gave him a little wave goodbye. He took a deep breath and tilted his head at her retreating figure and the corner of his mouth lifted slightly.

JULIANA
Juliana watched the children with increased unease. Even though she wasn't thrilled with Olivia's manners, the young ones clearly sensed something was very wrong with thise house. She listened as the little girl said words that unexpectedly felt like a slap to the face: "Not to mention the American lady doesn't even seem to trust you..."
She swallowed thickly and felt as if someone was squeezing her heart. If a child saw the tension between her and her boss, so did the adults. Julia had been nothing but loyal to the family since being hired. What if she was thrown back into her miserable life? The Quintons were the first wealthy family she worked for that she liked. The previous families had been too lenient with their children's punishments. She remembers distinctly how the overly painted face of the mother had bared down on her, shouting about how her child was too well-behaved to be put in time-out; how disciplining her child would set her back in her development.
That girl had screamed and thrown things at Juliana when she didn't get her way, so naturally, she put her in time-out. She would never strike a child, but she had been very tempted with that one. After the fight with the rich and snotty mother, Julia had resigned. Just a week later, the Quintons had contacted her. Lucille had recently had her youngest set of twins. They had welcomed her with open arms from Michael down to Akila who was the youngest non-infant at the time.
The nanny moistened her lips then looked away and stood. "Come on, Oliver. Bed time." She put her hands on his shoulders and guided him towards the kitchen door to take him to bed.
She froze when she noticed a small smile be exchanged between Victoria and Michael. Excellent. Her hormones had to be controlled for the sake of her sanity. Nobody would be trusting her anytime soon. She felt isolated already. Her problems with Lucille made her feel even more like an outcast. She was different, there was no denying it, but she had felt welcomed among the Quintons. Michael dying had formed a wedge between them. Tensions were high.
She dropped her eyes again and guided her little charge out of the room and up the stairs to the children's bedrooms. She left him to sleep, still in her weird trance, and headed to her own room.
After washing up and changing into her silky gown, she dropped into bed and closed her eyes. Her candles still burned, bringing her comfort in the smells of lavender and vanilla.
Notes: Okay, there we go. x'D

LIFE IS A PILE OF GOOD THINGS AND BAD THINGS...
Victoria was alone with her children once when both were too small to remember. Her attention to them had been scattered all about the 'Matthew Timeline'. Little time for them and more time for him, it would seem, and part of Victoria regretted that and another...
School and work had prevented much time with either of them. No matter whether or not blood made a different in her connection, Victoria was neither attentive or active as a mother. Their father was a brilliant man with brilliant ideas and a devotion for his children that could not be matched.
So when Matthew had abandoned them and Victoria was alone-- all alone-- she was... lost. She never took the them to school. She didn't know their routines. She didn't help with homework. Or take them to rehearsals or practices or clubs. She was fortunate to make it to one of the parent/teacher nights at their school when Olivia was five.
Victoria didn't chase after Olivia when she stormed out of the house. Part of her admitted that it was better Olivia left before Victoria could remark back. What would she even tell her? That she was sorry their father was an arse and left them? Or that she was sorry that she was a whore in university and ended up stuck in a worthless relationship with an even more worthless man?
That wasn't fair. Victoria wouldn't have turned back the clock for any of that. The children: Oscar and Olivia were worth that heartache. Must be, because their smiles and their laughter and their sarcasm and their outbursts and their hobbies and their obnoxious questions... it was well worth it. Worth it all.
Both Cromwell children had ventured in their own directions and Victoria was left in the corner of the hall, staring out into the mess of blondes and brunettes that swarmed around the breakfast table and swatted at each other when someone took a sweet the other wanted.
She stalked over to where Michael was, sorting out the food and helping the Quinton's settle in. "Let Lucille know that if she needs him I'll be in the kitchens. Have some things to work though..." Her voice shivered as she might burst into tears with another word of mouth. Without waiting for an answer, Victoria started off.
Victoria walked out of the hall, disappearing behind a servants staircase hidden behind the walls and hopped down to the kitchen where it was quiet and her children wouldn't find her. School would ring it's sinister bells and the Cromwell's would be off to school... she hoped they'd be off to school.
The kitchens were deserted. While her time was limited, it was free. Victoria put a kettle on and flicked on a light to the kitchen's closet, looking to the shelves to find something sweet to add to her tea. The kitchens weren't well stocked; the staff hadn't expected to have so many mouths to feed so soon.
Honey. Second to the last shelf at the top. Victoria huffed, because it was moments like these she remember being so grateful to have Matthew, who stood a whole foot and an inch taller than her, to get things for her. Lifting her chin to the ceiling, Victoria let out another sigh of regret and started to climb the shelves that climbed up to the honey.

Michael was at his best as always. He had recovered quickly as soon as the Quinton children had arrived, as did Lucille. He wouldn't leave any chance of being thought of as not doing his job. He was on top of everything. He refilled coffee cups, pastries, anything that was requested or not. And everything he did he didn't complain once about any unruly attitudes.
The children were already filing out one after the other to catch the bus. Some of the adults disappeared from the room but Michael focused on doing his job. He started to clear things away, piling things on a platter as he made his way into the kitchen. It was empty, or so he thought as he put down the platter only to notice Victoria in the supply closet. An involuntary smile spread onto his lips as he watched her try to reach something on the top shelf.
When she started to climb the shelves to reach the desired object Michael whisked soundlessly over to the closet and came up behind her. She was stretching to reach a jar of honey. He reached over her, his body brushed lightly against her as he loomed over her to reach the jar of honey for her.
"Honestly, you could have asked for help. Climbing in those shoes, you will.....fall."
There was a lapse in his sentence as he suddenly realized she had not heard him approach and he had just unintentionally startled her. His arms instantly came up to catch her from falling and his eyes widened at his error. Addressed: victoria mentioned: quintons Tags: Ellienotes: it's the oh crap moment XD

LIFE IS A PILE OF GOOD THINGS AND BAD THINGS...
Once touched in a similar accord, Victoria stumbled backward and into the arms of a man, whose touch she felt unfamiliar. With lids closed, Victoria might've mistaken the touch as that of her memories. A cruel intention of a broken heart.
Part of her desired those memories to fade into her reality. The touch of a man she loved, held onto her before she fell down a delicate set of stairs. Her books and sheets of paper scattered about her feet, making the ceramic stairs slicker than already had to be.
When Victoria found herself pressed up a firm figure, she almost imagined that when she turned her gaze she'd find Matthew's dopey grin looking down at her, hiding a laugh, and eyes sparking madly into hers. But it wasn't Matthew she found looking down at her.
Michael had his arms around her waist, holding her to him with a support she had forgotten men could hold. The British brunette had her feet on the shelves still, pushing off slightly to give herself room to land without the support of the older gentleman, only her force threw them back further and together Michael and Victoria tumbled into the wall on the other side.
A scream escaped her vocals as the two collapsed onto the floor and she turned her head an instant only to catch the corner of Michael's ear on her nose. Her mouth fell open in an exasperated huff, an excess of air escaping her as she turned to face her 'rescuer'.
The force of their fall caused an uprising of dust and flour that gathered on the cupboard floor; and a thump was hit against the wall. It was the thump, Victoria figured that forced the door shut and closed them off in their own little world.
Victoria's face turned towards the rescuer. Their nose inches from one another; so close that the twenty-seven-year-old mother could feel his hot breath on her cheeks and she felt the blood rush from her head and into her stomach, creating a pit of discomfort at her core.
She was too close. Too close that she could feel...
"God..." Her breath rose over her tone and disguised her voice in a whisper. "Right-- Sorry, uh, I mean..." Shallow, uneven breaths took hold of all her sanities. She threw herself off him, crawled to the door in a scurry and reached for the handle, only to find that the handle wouldn't budge.
Victoria turned her body to give her strength more vibrato. It still didn't budge. "Damn it!" She mumbled a curse under her breath and shuffled backward, to touch her back to Michael's arms. Little room made it hard not to find his touch in the dimness.

Michael felt the soft weight hit him with a thud in the chest. His arms clasped around her body instinctively as they tumbled backwards. His back hit the wall and he emitted a soft grunt at the impact. Soft curves were pressing into areas he didn't want to think about and his hands were most likely in the most inappropriate places as they fell to the floor.
Victoria screamed in his ear as they went down, and still he clutched her to him. A second too long perhaps he held her when he should have released her immediately. He had held many feminine bodies but this one belonged to Victoria and he damned himself and his body for reacting instinctively. She practically landed in his lap of all things.
He finally released her when she scrambled to the door apologizing profusely, she jiggled the handle on the door. "No...That was my fault...sorry. Are you okay?" He tried to stand and found it difficult not to bump into things in the dim room that was suddenly too small for him. He bumped his head against something and hissed. He rubbed his head as he realized the door wasn't opening and he was pretty sure Victoria would be in a hurry to exit the dark cramped place.
"What is it stuck?" He moved forward to reach for the door handle and found it nearly impossible not to bump into Victoria in the process. She moved back against him as he reached beyond her to grab the handle. It wouldn't budge. He pressed against the door with his hands trying to apply force but at the same time trying not to come into contact with Victoria. It was impossible.
He stopped when his breathing started to increase. "Did we somehow get locked in?" He looked down trying to bring Victoria's face into view in the dark and he realized she was pressed between him and the door. He couldn't see her face but all he could hear was their labored breathing. "Victoria?" Addressed: Victoria Mentioned: x Tags: Ellie Notes: cue sexy music XD

LIFE IS A PILE OF GOOD THINGS AND BAD THINGS...
"Are you okay?" An echo shuddered across her auditoriums. "Victoria?" More memories forced themselves into her brain and threw her head into an ache that shattered her comfort. When she turned once more to see his face a shadow was cast over him.
Her mistake was allowing her memories to bleed into her current world. For a only a second, she saw hazel irises staring back at her, all big and dopey and desperate. Her head fell down, slumped over her shoulders, and when her gaze returned there was no more green to cloud her vision.
A bitter scoff was exhaled, and Victoria stumbled from the door and stood at the far end of the kitchen cupboard. "I'm fine, Matthew." Her voice was uncharacteristically harsh, like she had suddenly become cross with Michael; though, it wasn't his name she was hissing through her lips.
"Damn it." She hissed between her teeth. Biting her tongue, Victoria kicked forward, smacking the door with the soles of her feet. Futile efforts on her end, but it did well to calm her frustration. "Brilliant, just bloody brilliant..." Another harsh exhale and a huff to follow.
Victoria turned to find Michael had crumbled under his own insecurities, closer to her rather than on the other side of the cupboard as Victoria had originally tried to situate them. Futile efforts on her end. "So, we're stuck..." She hummed, and clicked her teeth together before fiddling with her fingers in her lap.
"This is not how I thought this day would go..." Victoria admitted, though it was said almost as a carefree remark. Had she not been so stressed, she would've chucked to herself. And then she froze-- eyes popped open, mouth falling agape.
Victoria had wide-eyes naturally, so whenever she looked shocked or worried it did nothing to hide her unusual facial features. The British mother clenched her firsts and shook out her head, holding her hair back between her ears as a new frustration came to mind.
"Olivia." Was all she managed at first, and then started a fast and furious pace. Pace as in two centimetres to the left and then another three to the right. Small, but quick and dizzying. "If I don't make sure they get on that bus-- damn it. Damnit. Damnit. Damnit." She blew a breath from her lips, generating a puff of the mouth and a vibration that only horses used as a form of communication.

It wasn't completely pitch dark, some light filtered through the cracks and under the door. It was enough to make out Victoria's form in front of him although her expressions he could only imagine. It was certainly uncomfortable, Michael didn't particular like small cramped places. His six foot frame was screaming to be out in the open with some fresh air, but for all intents and purposes Michael always seemed calm. If he could be counted on for anything it would be he sense of calm in stressful situations.
He must certainly be calmer than Victoria at the moment he mused. The tiny brunette seemed to be coming more and more agitated. Her voice rose with a harsh tone directed at him. Or rather not him. He blinked in surprise when she dropped the name Matthew. Matthew not Michael. He never asked Victoria about her past, he figured it was none of his business, but he did know the name. Matthew was her.....ex. He made no mention of her mistake to her, it was probably just a slip of the tongue after all.
Her uneasiness seemed to grow though. He felt the moment she tried to kick the door open, and he almost said something then as he was afraid she might hurt herself. She was muttering a string of sentences that to Michael sounded incoherent. She started to pace back and forth in a distracting manner, it was more of a fast sway and Michael's focus shifted from their predicament to her.
"Olivia." The way she uttered her daughter's name put Michael into full alert. "If I don't make sure they get on that bus-- damn it. Damnit. Damnit. Damnit."
Ignoring his better judgement and reacting on pure instinct Michael reached out and grabbed her by the shoulders to stop her. "Calm down! It'll be alright." Once his hands were on her shoulders though, he found himself hauling her to him in a hug. It was like he had no control over his body. It was like trying to fight gravity. His chin rested by the top on her head and he spoke calmly in an attempt to soothe her.
"Don't worry. We'll get out of here soon and you'll see....the kids will be fine."

LIFE IS A PILE OF GOOD THINGS AND BAD THINGS...
Victoria never believed her mother when she had told her that children drove the sanest women mad. She did now. More than ever.
She could feel the air stiffen around her. She had run out of breath; soon as the air returned to her chest, Victoria let out a last huff of air as Michael's hands settled around her shoulders. His grip had loosened when she relaxed, but she felt that tension in the palm of hands right before he pressed his frame against hers.
Startled at first, but drawn into the unexpected warmth that the butler offered, Victoria rested her head against his chest and took in a deep breath. The air in the room had turned stale; the air having been sucked out with the uneven breaths.
Her head rubbed against the fabric of his shirt in an attempt to shake out his statement from a 'man who could never understand'. Victoria's hands pushed on his waist, pulling their bodies apart for the moment that she found his gaze. Still with a little shake in her noggin, Victoria found her voice: "You don't have kids, do you, Mr. Michael?" Like she needed to wait for an answer.
The English mother shrugged her shoulders upwards. "Never thought I'd be a twenty-seven-year-old single mum in America... Think they know I'm struggling, which is why they push me... push me until I'm up against the wall." Her eyebrows jerked upward, a familiar cheekiness returned to her mien.
"Olivia's turned into her dad," And suddenly, Victoria couldn't find the 'off switch' to her voice. Her tongue flicked and sound floated out. "Always pushing my boundaries, knowing how to drive me mad and how to get her way..."
She had started to drive into her mind again, drifting to a different point in her timeline. "Matthew used to tell me he was going into London city and then he'd phone me from Lymington. Hours from where he said he was going to be."
"Olivia might be on her way across the Atlantic by now and what can I do about it?" Somewhere in the midst of her little tangent, Victoria had turned out of Michael's grasp, spun around the closet and found her body, once again, pressed against Michael's... only to push herself away and allow herself to breathe, as if she had forgotten how in her fit.

Michael had always thought that he and Victoria shared a good friendship. It fell on the more professional side of things though. They had an easy camaraderie, but it never got too personal. He knew facts about her as she did him, he was sure she knew of his extracurricular activities although she'd never ask him details about it. In a similar way, he never pried into her personal life and now he was feeling a bit surprised as she revealed these things to him. It must be the circumstances.
"You don't have kids, do you, Mr. Michael?" Mr Michael? An involuntary smile tugged at his mouth. "No, no I don't. I doubt I ever will at this age." he gave a chuckle to indicate he wasn't too disturbed by that. "I came from a large family though, I had five younger siblings to look after."
Victoria moved away from his embrace as she vented her feelings to him. She talked of her children and Matthew, letting slip moments and feelings about him that Michael hadn't heard from her before. He just listened and made no comment on his opinion of what she revealed. She gave Michael the impression that Matthew had never been very reliable and that Olivia seemed to be taking after her dad in some respects.
Then Victoria's comments turned onto herself in a way that sounded like she was judging herself as a mother and coming up lacking. That's when Michael broke his silence. "I know it doesn't count for much coming from a bloke like me, but I think you're a wonderful mother. You're raising two kids single-handedly while managing a large estate and having to deal with unruly butlers like me." He grinned, trying another attempt at humor to ease her mind of worry.
Her body bumped back into his as she turned around and his hand came up to pat her head like a child. Or at least that's what he intended. Something platonic and comforting. His hand slid from the top of her head down her hair until his hand rested by the back of her neck.

LIFE IS A PILE OF GOOD THINGS AND BAD THINGS...
Michael. He was a notorious womaniser. Victoria had inclinations of his extracurriculars; but she never asked about it nor did she feel like she should ever have to. It was an honest shock to her that he didn't have children. It wasn't that he acted like a father or that he that he had the mannerisms of someone who was tired and overworked like a father should be; but it was because... He had no shortage of female bedmates.
"Don't say that." The mother of two laughed despite herself. "If you ever feel the need to experiment as a father, you can borrow my children anytime."
Something in her relaxed and with it followed her mind. Less, she felt the need to panic or scream or kick at the door. Her head fell to one side, hair cascaded down one shoulder and touched the skin that was exposed there.
His hand came to touch her head, to land all of the sudden at the back of her neck. Victoria's gaze scaled upward to find his. Something darkened. Michael's gaze sharpened on her and she felt the air being sucked out from between them.
Victoria felt that same butterflies-in-the-stomach feeling that she had the first time Matthew touched her cheek. "You really think that highly of me?" Her gaze lowered lazily down to his lips and she found her head falling slightly towards his arm as if to trap it there forever.
"It means more to me than you think." It was like something out a film. Where the boy and the girl were trapped in a closet, talking about the feelings when suddenly one just... leaned in.
Victoria couldn't consciously explain the pull that she felt, but in that moment she tipped up on her toes; her hands had automatically reached up to brush the suit covering his arms. Her fingers gripped at the suit's fabric; while the other hand pull at the lapels, pushing them together and pulling him towards her in one brief moment of weakness... and then she stopped.
Her eyes rose to find his and she hesitated, because she had no idea what she was doing. In that moment. In the moment to come. In the moments that would come from this foolish act of humanly impulse. It was up to him now... and she had forgotten. Forgotten it all: Matthew, both her children. It was like she twenty, all over again and someone was pulling at her heart.

"If you ever feel the need to experiment as a father, you can borrow my children anytime." The innocent comment, said in laughter, had Michael imagining more intimate moments. Some were more innocent, the imagery of playing house with her and the children...and some were not so much. He decided it was probably wise not to comment on how far the experiment could go. He was a bit surprised with the direction of his thoughts, but then they evaporated like vapor.
"You really think that highly of me?" He met her eyes then and read the emotions churning in them. For a moment she seemed young and innocent, like a girl he had asked to the dance and they ran away somewhere to hide and make out. Don't imagine it, don't imagine it. He almost felt like his imagination was running away with him as he gazed at her face, she seemed to be looking at his mouth.
"Yes, of course I do." His voice came out sounding low and soothing. Why did the dark amplify everything? All he could focus on was the silky feel of her hair, or the nice smell coming from her skin. Was she wearing perfume? "It means more to me than you think." Her soft voice floated over to his ears as he searched her eyes. One of her hands rested on his sleeve while the other one clutched at his lapels on his uniform, and her body gravitated toward him as she rose up on her toes. For a heart stopping moment Michael thought she was actually going to kiss him, but then.....she stopped.
There was hesitation, uncertainty in her eyes. His hand had drifted lightly down her back to rest at the small of her back when she leaned close to him. Now it tightened around her waist in silent protest. Somewhere deep inside him he was afraid she would push him away and run. He had always relied on Victoria to keep that distance, to draw that line because well...he had no will power.
They stood frozen still staring at each other, with his arm pulling her tightly against him. His other hand came up to cup her cheek and his fingers slid into her hair. The moment was unpredictable, possibly unfortunate, certainly unplanned. His head tilted to one side and his face lowered imperceptibly. Their breaths mingled. Then swiftly, almost as if just realizing the precariousness of their situation, he ducked his head.
His mouth touched hers, sweetly. It lingered. Pressed. It parted her lips. Then the tip of his tongue touched hers. He felt a jolt of sizzling electricity and he suddenly pulled back and released his hold on her. It came as quite a shock to his system, this chemistry. He didn't move away from her though and he lowered his face closer to her ear. His voice came out as an anguished sigh. "Victoria..."

LIFE IS A PILE OF GOOD THINGS AND BAD THINGS...
"Victoria..."
Like an echo. She had shut herself to this scenario, excluded all futures and histories. In that moment, Victoria felt infinite.
Her mouth collided with Michael's in one moment of brilliant impulse. Her head tilted towards him, toes standing as her sole support. Victoria's frame fell into his. His arms around her; a warmth she couldn't describe had overtaken her.
Both hands now stuck on the lapels of his suit, Victoria forced herself up, to better reach his tall frame. At the same time his tongue pushed past the barriers of her lips and that familiar intimate touch of two dancers made her melt further into him.
To fall back then all of the sudden. Victoria let her feet flatten on the floor. Her hands loosened on the lapels, but remained there without falter. Her mouth fell open; but her vocals failed her.
Michael's breath his her cheeks. She had so much she wanted to tell him. There were so many questions running through her mind. The one that punctured her skull the worst was: is this another hookup for him? Is she another conquest that he can add to his black book?
When sanity did return to her, Victoria fell from Michael's touch. "Sorry..." She muttered; her voice barely a whisper. If she hadn't been so close to him he would've never heard her at all. "I... don't know... what I was thinking..." Her gaze finally rose to find his, unsure of she'd find her.
She knew, however, what he would find in hers. Confusion. Regret. And still... Trust, and affection, and want. It was a desire she promised never to act on, but she did... for what? Because he saw her the way she wished she saw herself: wonderful.

"Sorry...I... don't know... what I was thinking..." Before she had even begun to mutter her apology, Michael was already shaking his head no at her. When she stepped back from him, his hand shot out and snagged hers to keep her from moving away. "No!" His voice had rose but he paused to get himself under control again. He already felt the loss of warmth from her body, a chill that had nothing to do with the temperature. "I mean...no you don't need to apologize...I'm so..." His words broke off as his gaze dropped to their joined hands. He frowned.
He felt that urge to respond automatically. To say he was sorry too, but he suddenly couldn't. His mind was saying one thing, but his body was refusing to listen. He raised her hand up a little closer to his face as he stared at it. He rubbed his thumb across her knuckles in a caress. "I can't even say that I'm sorry because I already want it to happen again." His eyes sprang back up to hers, hers were still full of confusion and regret. His were lit with an internal fire.
"I was surprised."
If he had any sense or wisdom he should have just followed her lead and agreed that it was just a little mistake, and they should forget about it. If not for those glimpses he caught of other emotions in her eyes. There was uncertainty yes, but there was also a desire, a yearning that his own body refused to ignore. Even now he couldn't fight the urge to touch her and he continued to caress her hand.
He inched forward slowly again, closer to her until he could feel the heat from her body again. Until her back was pressed against the door to the closet. He leaned in toward her. "Tell me that this isn't just my fervid imagination."

LIFE IS A PILE OF GOOD THINGS AND BAD THINGS...
It came as an unfamiliar urgency, something she would have never expected out of the emotionally restrained butler of thirty-eight. His head at first the only protest, before he snatched her back towards his frame, replacing the emptiness with her once again.
"Michael..." She had meant it to sound as protest, but instead it came out weak and muffled by her own laboured breath. Her chest started to palpate, so loud she swore that Michael could've heard it especially with how close he become.
With what started as a forceful touch quickly turned sweet and the butler brushed over her knuckles with a sort of reverence for her skin that she hadn't felt in over a year. He made it impossible. What was it about this man that made Victoria want to forget everything that she had ever promised herself?
Don't get attached. Don't fall in love. That's all she had to do; but there was something-- a fire that had roared across her heart and refused to be put out with logic.
Her eyes dipped down, focusing on everything except that face of longing, and she felt his body press her against the door. One hand fell backwards, laying flat against the wood until it found the knob and she tensed, using the knob of the door as her only support before allowing herself to look up.
He was begging for an answer, some sort of confirmation that this wasn't his own humorous imagination. Victoria searched for the words-- for any words; but even in that moment of protest, she found herself closer to him. Her head bowed towards his chest, so close that she could hear his heart beat. While her other hand was still in his, Victoria could feel every and all the emotions running around his hand just in the way he caressed her knuckles.
"It's not..." Protest was over. And for the first time since finding herself pressed back against the door, Victoria found his gaze, and her head started to shake. "But it's complicated. You don't want to be with me. Single mother of two when one of them--" She had started to say that one of them wasn't even hers, but that wouldn't been a lie. Blood didn't make him less than Olivia. "You don't want that burden." She promised him.
Victoria's other hand had tightened around the knob, wanting it to turn, desperate for that reason of escape. For if it didn't, she would surely give into whatever her imagination dreamed possible, and complicated wouldn't even begin to describe how that would turn out.

Juliana huffed with relief when Lucille took over, watching her get the last of the little demons into their backpack and out the door. The mother could handle things from here. She smiled a little, relieved to see Lucille jumping back into her role at mother. It wasn't that she hadn't been a mother at all, but she had been severely mentally crippled by losing her mate. Juliana suspected she would feel the same way had the situation been reversed, but it still bothered her how closed off Lucille had been with her kids, who were just as hurt as she was.
She tilted her head and nodded when Lucille asked her to hunt down the house manager. Victoria was easily identified because her accent matched Juliana's. "I'll send her to you," she said agreeably then marched off. She hummed to herself as she wondered the halls. Lucille seemed pretty distracted, and this house was big enough that Victoria could be in any of the rooms. She might as well explore a little.
The nanny wondered around, seeing other employees but not greeting them verbally. She gave them smiles if they looked at her, but she otherwise kept to herself. She found multiple offices and bedrooms along with ancient sitting rooms that gave off menacing energy. She grimaced and retreated at once. This house was... this house might not be safe. She gripped an iron symbol around her neck and instantly felt better. She wore the symbol as light protection against negative energies. It wasn't much, but it made her feel a little better.
When she didn't find Victoria on the main floor, she frowned thoughtfully. Where else could she be? Then something brushed passed her, like a light breeze. It felt cool and oddly invasive. She shook her head and descended the stairs into the kitchens. At first glance, the room appeared empty. She huffed and moved to the stove, starting to brew tea while she thought of where to look for the manager next. She looked around, but someone had put her imported teas away. Slightly annoyed, she checked the cupboards one by one then decided they had to have been shelved in the pantry
Juliana stalked across the room and grabbed the doorknob, pulling the door open with more force than she intended because of her irritation with her tea being moved. She yelped as the very woman she was looking for stumbled out of the pantry, for she appeared to have been holding onto the handle. She stared with round eyes when it was obvious Victoria hadn't been alone. Micheal was in the closet as well.
Well, they hadn't been in there to snack on the chips or find her tea for her. Juliana's grey eyes narrowed before she blinked and simply stared at them. "What do you think you're doin'!?" she demanded, her accent becoming a little harsher in her surprise, embarrassment and... in spite of herself, jealousy. Did she have any claim on the butler? No, but she felt like a moron now for fantasizing about him like a dumb school girl with a crush! "You could have done that in your bedroom instead of where our food is stored," she added snappishly, forgetting about her tea and backing up a few steps. "Lucille wants to speak with you, Victoria," she added over her shoulder as she left the room. She knew her cheeks were flushing, but she had had an angry enough reaction that that's how they would most likely take it.
With the children gone, Juliana could take a break. She headed up to her bedroom, shut the door, then began lightning her elemental candles to channel some positive energy for herself.

It was like being under a spell, or under the influence of a drug. A drug that made you throw caution to the wind and do things that maybe you wouldn't do normally. He stood in front of Victoria with his hands flat on the door on either side of her head. She was giving him perfectly sensible reasons as to why they shouldn't.... A single mother with two kids wasn't exactly what he went for with his usual one night stands or casual sex. He avoided women with "baggage", and the women always knew up front what to expect from him because he was always honest and to the point. He couldn't fault any of the logic Victoria put forth to him. "You don't want that burden."
Then why did he feel like saying that he'd decide that for himself? He stared into her eyes and saw indecision. Like she felt torn herself. She knew it was a bad idea but wanted it too. He felt like she did anyway, and he wanted to test it. He leaned in closer to her instead of giving her space. Damn, he was going to kiss her again. She looked like she wanted to be kissed.
Then suddenly there was light. The door swung open like it had never been stuck to begin with, and with it went their stability. They both stumbled out of the closet and Michael reached out to grab the door frame to keep from falling on top of Victoria.
"What do you think you're doin'!?" In a daze Michael realized the nanny, Julianna, had been their liberator. She was also jumping to the most obvious conclusion. She insinuated that he and Victoria just had a quickie in the closet. Then she told Victoria that Lucille was looking for her before storming away. "Wait! It's not what you......think." his voice died as she was already out of the room and didn't hear him anyway. "Damn it. This could be bad." He glanced at Victoria with an apologetic look. He was used to this kind of scrutiny but he doubted she was. She had more at stake than he did. If Julianna said something about them to Lucille... "I'm sorry Victoria. This is all my fault. Maybe I should talk to Julianna and explain that nothing happened..." His eyes sprang to hers again because he knew. He knew it was a lie. Something very profound happened. LIFE IS A PILE OF GOOD THINGS AND BAD THINGS...
Victoria was struck backwards and stumbled into the kitchen with a brush of wind from the force. It took a moment for the room to settle in her vision; and when it did, Victoria felt her mouth fall.
Still with a hand on the door, Juliana stood in front of them with a flare in her nostrils, like she was about to scold them she scolded the Quinton children. Victoria felt like she should talk-- to explain-- but she couldn't bring herself to...
The air froze around her. Juliana did shout. She demanded of them their actions and then 'Lucille' came up. "Me? What does she want me for?" Stupid of her to ask, because more than likely Lucille needed her to look at the books; but her brain was all muddled now.
Juliana didn't answer. She disappeared behind the door and started back upstairs without another word. Victoria felt stuck; she hadn't even moved her head from the vision of the exit. But Michael pulled her back into focus.
Shaking her head, throwing her hands up and pulling the hair back from her face, Victoria narrowed her gaze towards the butler and puffed her lips in exasperation and desperation. "No." She said immediately. "You've done enough. I'll handle this."
"Just..." Her voice choked, and her gaze fell away from him. "Just stay away from me. Ok?"
Anger drove her now and she jogged toward the exit after Juliana, having to snatch the door frame to keep from slipping and falling across the hall. "Juliana wait!" Victoria could see her on the stairs. "Juliana!"

"You've done enough. I'll handle this."
Her curt words had an effect like a bucket of cold water dumped on his head. His head came up in surprise and he blinked like he'd been stuck between the eyes and had yet to figure out what had hit him.
He frowned. He wanted to object to her comment but he recognized the no nonsense managerial tone she pulled out to let people know she meant business. So he bit his tongue. If he argued with her now, it would be seen like insubordination. His scowl remained though as she added, "Just....just stay away from me."
His heart plummeted to his feet. While her words sounded like an accusation, her voice had been shaky and she avoided his eyes. She went running from the kitchen then to catch Julianna although it felt more to Michael like she was running from him. That irritated him and soured his normally content mood. He whirled around and started to finish the tasks he had been doing before they got trapped in the pantry. His movements were brisk and after setting some objects down with more force than he intended, he paused to take a breath.
Calm yourself Michael. "She didn't mean that." He sounded like he was trying to convince himself, but deep down he thought he knew Victoria well enough that she didn't really think he had orchestrated this or something. He had never pushed a woman to do anything she was uncomfortable with and he figured Victoria knew that about him. She had to. She had just been shaken by what happened, he reasoned. He really didn't know what he would do if she started to avoid him. He didn't want that. He didn't want this to affect their friendship. He didn't want to stay away from her either.
"She just said that because....because you scared the hell out of her, obviously. Argh!" A frustrated laugh broke out of his throat and he dropped his face into one of his hands and rubbed his eyes. Then he straightened up and began to quickly put things away in the cupboards with a speed that would make someone dizzy. The house was quiet now, the children had gone to school. He wasn't sure where Lucille was and the rest of the staff must have moved on to their other daily duties. He mentally ticked off the other things he had planned to do today once the family was mostly gone. He had several tasks and things that required maintenance in the house that he needed to check on. It was best to keep himself busy with work so he wouldn't dwell on what happened.
"Yes well, good luck with that." He snorted but resolved to try and speak with Victoria again if he got the chance to talk about what happened. He certainly wasn't the type to forget or ignore something, he approached it head on. He hoped Victoria didn't intend to stick to her words because he didn't.

HARDSHIPS PREPARE ORDINARY PEOPLE FOR EXTRAORDINARY DESTINY
Nevaeh left for home shortly after her brother had collected himself. The better part of her didn't care what happened to Elliott after today, but the other part wanted to spread around the house and see how much laughter she could carry out.
The teen ran through the hallway and into the kitchen. It was usually her first stop after school; but she had forgotten the new house and slipped into two different rooms before finally landing in the new kitchen.
"Mom?" Nevaeh shouted out into the abyss, not paying attention to who might've been in the room. "You will not believe the scene your son caused today--" She hit the chair with a thud and popped a grape in her mouth that had been sitting on the counter.
Nevaeh frowned when she realised her mother was nowhere near hearing her. Instead she was face-to-face with a woman she had never met before. Nevaeh assumed she worked in the kitchens, but she didn't much care for the servants in the other house so why should she suddenly take notice now?
She slowed her chewing and swallowed, never taking her eyes off the woman. "So which one are you?" Nevaeh asked carelessly.

Tristan looked at the young girl as she came waltzing in and plopped down in the chair and started to eat the grapes on the counter. "So which one are you?" She had asked. "Well for starters my name is Tristan. I'm your cook." He had said to her as he raised a eyebrow at her rudeness. He thought to himself (this kids needs to know some manners, huh Blue would love to chase them for the hunt) he thought as he smirked at the thought.

Nevaeh raised her brow. She found it hard to see this man as the 'cook'. She looked at him, tilted her gaze over his form with a frown and then shrugged. She didn't really care; Nevaeh was bored. She popped another grape between her teeth and let the silence stand still inside the room.
"Mom always liked our cooks to be female." Nevaeh pointed out without revealing a hint of emotion. She did, however, hope to elicit something from the hardened man. He looked more like a soldier than a cook. He was even sort of handsome.
The Quinton twin brushed the hair out her face and puckered her lips in thought. "My brother and I always liked the other cooks." She admitted. If the man knew anything about her and Nikolai, he'd understand why that was such an extraordinary reveal.
Nevaeh gave him one final glance before pulling all of her attention to what little food was out on the table. She desperately craved a glass of water, but she was too nervous to ask for it. She had no idea why. It was very unlike Nevaeh to be shy about anything.
"Why are you a cook? You look more.... calloused." She asked finally, although it wasn't the question she had intended to slip out. "Like you should be fighting a war, not cooking for nine kids and their depresso mother."

He smirked as she asked him about why being a cook. In his odd accent he answered her. "It relaxes me. Same as huntin and trackin, my wolf Blue loves it too. I guess it's the thrill of the hunt for him. Raised him as a pup myself." He said to her. Then he went to the fridge and pulled the water out and gave it to her. "Want something to eat?" He asked her.

After entering the house, he too dodged their mother and headed to the kitchen with Nevaeh. He did not want to recount their day. He didn't want to be reminded of any of the weirdness at school today with Elliott. Lucky for him Nevaeh shared his current state of mind. He was starving!
She was already popping grapes into her mouth and chatting with a man who turned out to be the cook. Nikolai picked up an apple from the bowl of fruit on the table and took a bite out of it. His eyes followed their conversation.
"My brother and I always liked the other cooks."
Nikolai let out a little laugh. "It's hard to hate someone who gives you food."
He too found the male cook interesting. It was something different. He raised an eyebrow though at his sister. She seemed oddly shy, which was so unlike her. Is she trying to flirt? Nikolai silently laughed to himself. He so wanted to tease her about it later.

Seeing one of her brothers enter the kitchen, Tristan nodded to him. He had asked about anything else to eat. "Would you like me to make you something while you wait here." He had asked the young man in his odd accent. His messed but somewhat stylish hair fell in his eyes and he wiped his head to move it.

HARDSHIPS PREPARE ORDINARY PEOPLE FOR EXTRAORDINARY DESTINY
Nevaeh popped another grape between her teeth. She held it there for a moment... and then split it. The juice sprayed from her lips and hit the table in front of her. Her mouth curled in what could only be described as a malicious smirk.
The oldest of the Quinton twins were the most devious and perhaps the closest the family had to a pair of sociopaths. The mess was the best. The game was only fun if someone cried at the end of it.
"You sure the wolves didn't raise you?" Her brow sprung upward and that smirk grew there on her lips. Her tongue spilling poison for the rats, Nevaeh flicked her tongue over the roof of her mouth like a snake playing with the mouse.
The cook continued. He was nice. It was frustrating.
Nevaeh kicked the counter in an attempt to shock the wolf-man. "You don't have to be so nice. We definitely aren't." Nevaeh raised a brow at her brother. She smiled, knowing there was a smile waiting for her behind his grimace.
"Tell me something wolf-boy, you got kids or did we just pop your cherry?" She leaned back in the stool. The vine from the grapes played between her teeth, Nevaeh bit at it until it splintered in her mouth.
