GHOSTS... THEY'RE JUST SPILLS FROM OUR NIGHTMARES. RIGHT?
addressed: akila Mentioned: lucille, siblings, Aurora Notes: Ahhh!! So cute!! Tags: @patch Ellie
Elsie finished throwing her belongings into drawers. She didn't like her room much. It scared her, though, it shouldn't have. There wasn't much wrong with it other than it was still a bit run down-- the floor creaked when she walked over it and the walls sang with the songs of the wind. There was a fireplace that also scared her because she didn't know what could come down that small hole-- something, everything maybe.
The little Quinton finished in her room as fast as she could and then ran down the hall to see what her other siblings were up to. Everyone was unpacking still, but that didn't stop Elsie from stopping in to see if they needed her help. Elsie ducked into her brother's room. She hopped onto the bed beside the door and looked around the room. Akila was quiet-- he was so quiet since daddy died and now all he did was face his back towards his family and do his own things. Always on his own.
Elsie sat up and rocked back and forth. The bed squeaked and the floorboard squealed with old age. "Is Aurora gonna sleep with you?" She asked timidly. Her hand scratching the duvet under her palms. "You have to hide her from mommy. She doesn't like her upstairs." Elsie continued. When she received silence, the little Quinton opened her mouth again, hoping to strike something in her brother. "I don't like her... this house. It's... too loud." She said finally and frowned. Her hands fiddling with each other's fingers.

AKILA Akila always would try and strive to be good and listen to his mother and Juliana - be a good kid and son. Really, his stomach would knot whenever he disobeyed something that either woman commanded of him but... He loved Aurora. "C'mon. We'll smuggle her up." Neveah, one of the older twins, whispered to him conspiratorially. "No need to keep her locked in the cold without us to keep her warm. Mother will never know. I promise." Akila blinked up at his sister in surprise. She was helping him? His dark eyes flickered to her face. He knew his sister could be a troublemaker, but she was helping him and being nice to him. Aurora didn't need to sleep in the cold kitchen by herself. She deserved to be snuggled up with them. Plus, she helped keep him centered. Akila waited for his mother to look away and address the new house staff before quietly leading Aurora up the stairs, through the hallway, and do his bedroom. He breathed a sigh of relief and let Aurora off leash. He put her lead into his bedside cabinet drawer then patted the bed so she hopped up and curled into a ball on the bed. She huffed and closed her eyes sleepily.
Smiling, Akila started unpacking his suitcase, which he opened beside the napping dog. He was putting his shirts away when Elsie, the youngest Quinton, came into his room and sat on the bed. He gave her a small smile. He adored the youngest kids because he had taken them under his wing. He watched her as she sat on the bed, her fingers fiddling with themselves. Akila frowned and sat down between Elsie and Aurora so he could pat the dog gently.
When Elsie asked if Aurora would be sleeping with him, Akila shrugged a shoulder. "If everyone keeps quiet about it," he murmured. He doesn't think he can keep her hidden for long. Even if his mother was blind to her children's antics - Juliana was not. The British nanny would chew him up and spit him out - mostly because Juliana did not like dogs. Akila noticed her tough exterior crack whenever Aurora was walking by. He thought maybe she had been hurt by a dog before, and that was why she was afraid of Aurora. Maybe if Aurora hid under the bed when Juliana came to check on them...
Then Elsie was talking about the house. Akila froze and listened. The house scared him, too, but his sister was always a little more sensitive about vibes people gave off. His dark eyebrows pushed together as he looked around. "Too loud?" he repeated blankly. "Do you mean, like... ghosts?" The house was pretty old, and Akila had read his share of horror novels. His mother didn't approve, so he hid them with guilt. Spooky houses and graveyards were pretty common settings in the books, regardless if they were fictional or not. A cold shiver ran down Akila's spine. "This place is old, Elsie," he murmured gently. He had been very closed off since his father's death, but he could tell his little sister was upset. He would push down his emotions if it meant helping her. He scratched Aurora's ears. "If you're that nervous, you can stay here with Aurora and me. Like a sleepover." He shrugged. He normally craved his alone time, but she needed her big brother to assure her she would be okay.

GHOSTS... THEY'RE JUST SPILLS FROM OUR NIGHTMARES. RIGHT?
addressed: akila mentioned: elliott, daddy notes: so adorable! tags: @patch @fez
Elsie climbed around the back of the mattress to find herself next to Aurora, who was cuddled at the end of the bed. Her tail flopped atop the duvet with a thumping noise as Elsie rolled her thumbs over the sensitive mark on her doggie's bottom. Pressing her cheek to the fluff of the Shepard's hip, Elsie looked to her brother. Her round eyes gazing up at him innocently. "I promise to be the most quietest."
He was the bestest big brother when it came to making her feel better. He was even better than Elliott, but that was because Elliott was afraid of more things than she was. "There are no such thing as ghosts..." Elsie whispered more like a hope than a fact. "I just.. don't like it here." Her voice soft, she continued. "There's no... daddy here." She avoided watching him in that moment.
When Elsie Quinton fixed her position on atop the mattress so that the trio was now in a sorta triangle, the smallest Quinton popped up from her rested state and beamed up at her brother with her eyes a different sort of round-- sweet and playful and enthusiastic! "You mean it?" She begged.
This was one of the first times since daddy died that Akila had invited Elsie to do anything with him. To add to that, she was cuddled close to her favourite, fussiest family member. "You're not gonna lock me out when it gets dark, are you?" She asked with a pitiful pout.

AKILA Akila watched his youngest sister pet Aurora with affection. The Aussie was really a good dog. Even as an older dog, Aurora tolerated enthusiastic pets from the younger kids. Akila moved closer then smiled broadly as Elsie insisted she would be the "most quietest". "I bet you will be," he said softly. "You'll have to help me keep Aurora hidden, okay?" He sighed and looked at his new bedside clock. It would be time for dinner soon. He took off his shoes and tucked them under his bed before sitting cross-legged beside Elsie and Aurora.
He froze when Elsie continued to speak. "There are no such thing as ghosts..." Akila smiled hesitantly. Of course not. He was just being paranoid. He loved to read, but he should really separate fantasy from reality. They were safe here with their mom and Juliana watching over them... right? They had Aurora, too, he couldn't forget. Then... "I just... don't like it here. There's no... daddy here." Akila's eyes burned with tears instantly. He dropped his gaze away from her and swallowed the lump forming in his throat. "Yeah..." he said thickly. "He's not here anymore." His heart ached. He missed his father so much. He had been so much fun. "I miss him." He rubbed at his eyes hastily and shook his head. The loss of their father was like a fresh wound that festered whenever he heard the words "dad" or "dead". He felt like he had swallowed snakes, and they were writhing in his stomach.
Elsie broke through his thoughts by asking if he meant it when he said she could stay in his room for the night. He made sure his face was dry of tears before looking at her. "Of course I mean it. What kind of big brother would I be if I wasn't there for you?"
"You're not gonna lock me out when it gets dark, are you?" Akila frowned. "No. I wouldn't do that to you." Had Neveah or Nikolai done that to her before? He felt angry instantly. Really, the older twins had their issues, but they didn't need to bully little Elsie. She was the least annoying of their siblings in Akila's opinion. Even if it had been Thea, it still wouldn't have been cool. "But only for a few days at most," he told her firmly. "You need to be a big girl and sleep by yourself, too, okay?" He touched her hand, the one on Aurora's rump, and looked at her calmly but gently. "I know it's scary here, but we're safe with mama and Juliana, okay?" Akila was scared, too, but he needed to be strong for her sake. If he acted scared, Elsie wouldn't feel confident enough to stand on her own two feet.

GHOSTS... THEY'RE JUST SPILLS FROM OUR NIGHTMARES. RIGHT?
addressed: Akila mentioned: Aurora, Lucille, Juliana, Theia notes: Moving to the Hall! tags: @patch Ellie @fez
Elsie's foot shifted over to the head of the mattress and the brunette's hair turned to static as she brushed her head from side-to-side on the Shepard's backside. Aurora rolled over onto her back and Elsie's cheek fell to the canine's exposed tummy. "Good girl. Best girl." Elsie mumbled into the canine's fur.
For a moment Elsie felt safe and protected there with her older brother. But he opened his mouth and again those words came spilling out, the ones that would push her further and further away. Akila hadn't been the same... not since dad and Elsie didn't think she'd ever get her brother back.
He assured her of her safety there with mommy and Juliana, but Elsie just shook her head. She lifted away from Aurora, keeping her eyes on the puppy's underbelly. "No we're not..." Elsie didn't look at her brother. "We're not safe here." She waltzed around the subject. She wasn't sure if this was just a feeling and that it would just pass, but Elsie knew better... she knew that there was something not right here.
And then is if on cue there was a screaming coming from another room and that sound roamed out into the hall. Elsie perked right back up and leaped out of the bed with Aurora jumping down after her, barking madly at the closed door. "What the heck is that?!" Elsie had gone completely bug-eyed as she opened the door and Aurora charged out of the room.

A K I L A Akila woke up the next morning in a cold sweat, all but screaming his lungs out. He got out of bed and stumbled into the bathroom. He hovered over the toilet and waited for his dinner to come up on him. When nothing happened except he got dizzier, Akila put the lid down and ran the sink. He splashed cold water on his face and trembled, trying to wash away the nightmare as best he could.
He gulped and stared at his reflection. He had shadows under his dark eyes after several sleepless nights. Last night had been the worst he's ever experienced. He had dreamed of his father. It had felt so real, like he had woken up from a simple nap and had a normal conversation with his dad.
Akila remembered his voice and had heard it plain as day last night. His father had been initially warm and friendly... then he had changed. He had gotten angry and told Akila that he shouldn't be here, in this house. But he said it in a way like it was Akila's fault. It had been weird because his father's eyes had gone from brown to red. He said he, Akila, was to blame for their sudden move and the fact the house was unhappy.
Shivering, Akila slumped to the bathroom floor and closed his eyes, breathing shallowly. He tried to banish the dream, but it was if his brain was branded with the images and sounds of the dream.

GHOSTS... THEY'RE JUST SPILLS FROM OUR NIGHTMARES. RIGHT?
Addressed: Akila mentioned: aurora, michael (dad) notes: short, but i'm excited and happy to rp her again!! xd <33 tags: @patch
Elsie awoke only because she heard her brother stumble into the bathroom. She had cuddled in his bed, slept so soundly with Aurora warming her tangled legs. It was morning and it was early and the sun had barely begun to reach the earth when all of the sudden Elsie was up and staring at the closed door attached to Akila's bedroom.
Elsie slid out from under the covers, having to wiggle free from underneath Aurora and tiptoed to the bathroom door. Knocking twice before trying the handle, Elsie leaned her forehead against the door and listened for any signs of movement.
"'Kila, you okay?" She breathed with her lips nearly kissing the wood. Her heart beat in her chest and she felt his panic from between the barriers. Elise worried; she always worried, but she seemed to worry about Akila the most. He had changed the most since daddy died...
She tried for the handle again, but it refused to move. She knocked once. She knocked twice. "Please come out..." She was never demanding or intimidating; her voice was soft and scared, which was usually enough to have her brother's running to her rescue. Perks of being so young and so cute.
Then, Elsie's gaze drifted to the clock. "We have to get ready for school..." This was the day she had been dreading. School. Kids didn't always like her and now she would have to start over when she had just found her friends at her old school. This whole thing sucked, Elsie decided, and she had no idea how right she was.

A K I L A Akila was steadying his breathing when he heard the soft but insistent knocking of his little sister. She was also softly begging him to let her in. He grimaced. He had been hoping he had avoided waking her up, but he had apparently not harnessed his ninja skills that far. Akila thought about ignoring her, but she was his sister, and she cared about him. It wasn't in Akila's nature to tell her to go away either. He shut down when he felt any negative emotion. He thought he saw something lurking in the darker corner of the bathroom as he got up, but when he looked again, there was nothing there but the small waste basket.
He was convincing himself he had just imagined the movement when Elsie's voice brought him back to the present: "We have to get ready for school..."
Crap.
He had almost forgotten. They were hitting the ground running with this adjustment to a new life in a new town. A new school sounded like the worst. School meant bullies and distant teachers. Maybe this one would be different, but he knew it was wishful thinking. He bit his lip and opened the bathroom door, which unlocked as he moved his side of the handle.
Akila looked into his sister's big blue eyes and bit his lip. "I almost forgot we start school today," he told her honestly. He knew his chocolate-colored eyes were red-rimmed from crying, but he didn't have time for pity or getting her upset. They needed to collect themselves and get ready to start their new life.
Well, he planned on just walking passed her and getting ready for school, but he blurted, "Do you have dreams about Dad?" The words came out before he could bite his tongue, but he was scared. He had been scared since his father died, but seeing him like that in his nightmares only made things a thousand times worse. He wanted to go running to either his mother or Julia, but he didn't want to seem like a coward. He needed to be strong for Elsie's sake, but he felt like he was carrying a burden keeping these nightmares secret from everyone. "I see him, and he's.... he's not the same. His eyes are cruel, and he sneers at me. He makes me feel... unwanted."
The last word was wrenched from him. It was his worst nightmare: being unloved or seen as less important than the rest because he was the adopted child. He loved his parents and his siblings, but there was always that part of him that made him feel like an Other - as separate and distant from the others as if he were a different species. He didn't mean to drop all of this on little Elsie, but he was at his breaking point after weeks of doubt and the fear of being shunned for his depression and hopelessness on top of not being of Quinton blood.

GHOSTS... THEY'RE JUST SPILLS FROM OUR NIGHTMARES. RIGHT?
addressed: Akila mentioned: michael (daddy), aurora notes: i think these two are my favourite so far!!! I wanna cry at how cute and scared they are together!!! tags: @patch Ellie Alec
He didn't look well. Like he'd been sick half the night. His had red around the eyes and his hair was a matted mess. Elsie wanted to comb her fingers through it and make it fall to one side, to dab the corner of his chocolate orbs with a soft cloth; but she didn't touch him. She didn't approach him. Because she was afraid of the sorrow and the fear she saw inside him.
He pushed past her and towards the centre of the room. For a moment she thought that this was the end. He would dress and walk out of the room without another word to her or to the rest of the house. Aurora had disappeared already, ventured out of the room when the two of them had risen out of bed. But when Akila went to the dresser, he stopped.
Elsie watched him curiously. Her head fell to the side so that her hair tickled the corners of her neck and shoulder. She opened her mouth to ask what he was thinking about, but he ventured the answer without the question ever being asked.
Dad. Elsie always thought about Dad, but she never openly admitted to it. She was afraid that the man she saw in her visions was a monster dressed in her Daddy's clothes. Now, with Akila's thoughts echoing her own, she wasn't so sure she was mad anymore.
She offered a slow and subtle nod in response. Too afraid at first to speak up, Elsie backed against the bed and dwindled her fingers through the fabric of her nightdress, which was one of her Dad's old t-shirts she fashioned into a sleeping gown.
Akila's mind had drifted away and continuously prodded at the unanswered. Elsie's own nerves started to stiffen, but alas her voice came clear. "I see him, too. He's not angry with me, thought...." She admitted, seeing the disappointed in her brother's face. "I think he's sad.... or scared, because he's always crying and his mouth is open like he's trying to say something, but when it tries there's a black flood that comes out of his mouth, like melted tar." Elsie was afraid of her words. She watched and waited for her brother to confirm these fears...

A K I L A Akila shivered and sat beside her on the edge of the bed, his eyes on the golden knob on the bathroom door, but he wasn't really seeing it. He was thinking about all of the dreams he had had about his father since he died. A lot of them were too scary for him to even think about them again. He thought through them, the ones he could remember off-hand, and shuddered. Most of them had been about how his dad wanted to come home, but Akila couldn't do anything to help him. A few had involved his father screaming at him and developing a terrifying red glow in his eyes. That had been more recent. Spiders, rats, and yes, black tar-like liquid spilling out his mouth.
He shuddered and nodded silently at Elsie to confirm her statement. How they were having the same dreams he couldn't imagine. Akila vaguely remembered a pair of twins at their previous school claiming they had the same dreams a lot. As far as he knew, none of the Quinton twins, either pair, had had shared dreams. Maybe they should ask them if they had had dreams about Dad, too...
"Yeah, the black stuff coming out of his mouth. Sometimes, this black sticky stuff wraps around him like... like a spider's web. And he's trapped." Akila's voice cracked. He put his face in his hands. He didn't want to go to school in this state of mind, but he knew he needed to either be bleeding out or vomiting for either his mother or Julia to consider letting him stay home. Besides, the house itself was giving him the creeps. Maybe that was a part of his fear...
He got up and changed out of his pajamas into his school uniform. He hated having to wear it, but he had been putting one on since kindergarten, plus he was moving into an autopilot mode . He then stalked into the bathroom and combed his hair then brushed his teeth. After spitting and rinsing his mouth out, he looked over at Elsie. "Should we ask the others if they're having the scary dreams, too?" he asked uncertainly. What if they all thought that he and Elsie were crazy?

GHOSTS... THEY'RE JUST SPILLS FROM OUR NIGHTMARES. RIGHT?
addressed: Akila mentioned: dad, mum, elliott, nevaeh, catalina notes: she's one of my favs!!!! ♥ tags: @patch Ellie @fez @aaka2013 Alec
She sat afraid. Afraid of what come of this: this dream that she couldn't imagine others shared. Elsie shivered at the thought, shrinking into the back of the mattress and digging her toes in the sheets. The duvet was wrinkled in her grasp and pulled to her chin. She rested there.
At last she shook her head because she wasn't sure what else she could do. She didn't want to tell the others. She didn't want her mother to know she had these horrible dreams about their wonderful father. What if mother hated her for it? What if mother blamed her for daddy's death? Would these dreams tear them apart...? They could. If they weren't cautious.
Elsie opened her mouth to protest. To give her last confession: that she was terrified of what was to come from this. But when her mouth pouted open a sound echoed across the hall and it didn't come from her vocals. She jumped from the mattress, landed on her feet with a scrambled thud.
"What's that?" She stammered, startled to the core.
Elsie shuffled across the floor until she reached the door, pulled it open a crack and poked her head outside to find her brother being scooped into their mother's arms. "It's Elli..." She hummed, ashamed that she hadn't been there last night to keep him from waking alone this first morning.
The littlest Quinton in the room closed the door again and turned her front back towards her older brother. Her toes touched the carpet out in front of them and she folded her hands behind her back. With her head hung low over her shoulders, Elsie sighed and made a drumming noise with her tongue. "We should get ready for school and meet them for breakfast."
The truth was, Elsie very much wanted to talk to her brother still. She had been so afraid to talk to anyone and now that she knew she wasn't alone... Elsie couldn't, though, because school was starting and her twin brother needed her right now.
So she left Akila's bedroom, found a salmon coloured dress that came just above her knees, and a pair of white leggings to match to wear on her first day of school. She pulled her hair back with a decorative headband and took a necklace off the drawer that had belonged to Nevaeh (she stole it one morning when Nevaeh wasn't in her room) and wrapped around her neck, tucking into the dress until she got to school so her sister wouldn't notice.
With one last glance in the mirror, Elsie smiled and twisted her legs so that she saw her own back. She loved her dresses and she loved her style more than anything. She prided herself on her ability to dress like her older siblings and she loved to match with Nevaeh and Catalina, even if they hated when she did.
"Time to show Newton what Connecticut looks like." She beamed to herself, patted her hair down one last time, and then ran downstairs to meet the others for breakfast.

A K I L A Akila winced and watched his sister with terror in his eyes. What if the others thought they were freaks? He was just scared that the dreams were a bad omen. The house had been giving him the chills since they got here. Somehow, this new house seemed more haunted and terrifying than the house their father died at. It didn't make sense to Akila.
He flinched when he heard screaming and crying. Elsie just confirmed his suspicions that it was their brother. He huffed and pulled on his shoes as Elsie hurried off to get ready for school. Akila didn't really want to go, but he knew neither his mother nor Juliana would buy it if he told them he was sick.
After taking a deep breath and adjusting his shirt and jacket, Akila followed Elsie out the door but slipped down the hall towards the dining room. Food was the last thing on his mind, but he might as well act normal.
