Nevaeh found herself at the threshold of her new bedroom. It was more pristine that her brother's, which served well for her likes. Her mother chose this bedroom... for her, knowing her well enough. Selecting the appropriate room with the appropriate colours, however, did not deter Nevaeh from her set opinions of her mother's skills, or lack thereof, as an effective parent.

Terrors conquered her imagination as she stared into her pristine bedchamber. The events prior had her cold and shaking. So when Nevaeh was presented with the option to slide into her bedroom and turn down the lights, she opted to remain out in the hall with her brother.

She stumbled back and turned her head to see the brother still standing with her. Her eyes grew dark. "I don't think I can sleep..." She felt silly, like Elsie or Elliott complaining about a 'scary' house and refusing sleep

Her heart had started to race again and she felt her breath vanish from her lungs. This hall was cold and these walls, she swore the walls were staring at her, like a plot against a regime. "Do you think we're too old for a sleepover?" Nevaeh whispered at last, without wanting to look her brother in the eye, in fear that he would laugh or mock her, though those characteristics not in his nature. Not with her.

She watched as the expression on her brother's face seemed to lighten at her invitation. His sordid glance towards his dark, depressing bedroom was enough to assure her that she was not alone. A relieved smile shined on her cheeks and she didn't hesitate to start making the bed.

The sheets were new and soft; silk, since their mother could afford it. The pillows were untouched, waiting for their first head to leave it's imprint on their fluff; and the duvet was untarnished, waiting for Nevaeh to tear her first rip or spill an staining liquid on it's crystal whites.

Tonight the mattress would host two figures, confusing it's form, not knowing which body to remember and which to forget. If this house was as dark and cold as it was tomorrow night, perhaps the mattress would have to remember both and forget neither.

Nikolai crossed into her room, cracked a joke and flicked his brow upward in a taunt. Nevaeh scrunched her nose in response, sarcasm and wit returning all at once with his lighthearted mood filling the atmosphere. "I promise not to snore," she started, smooshing a pillow to fluff. "If you promise to keep your feet and your arms to yourself." She chucked the pillow at his chest. "You kick like a kangaroo in a boxing match." She retorted.

She disappeared into the bathroom for a moment, changed into something suitable for sharing a bed with her brother and slipped between the sheets, afterwards flicking the lights out and snuggling into the new mattress and unformed pillows. "Goodnight, Nikolai..." She whispered into the fabrics as her eyes drifted shut.

It felt strange and exciting and terrifying all at once. At least the room was light; but the air was still cold and the house still creaked and hummed to itself with the wind and the trees.
