She could never trust Nevaeh with the younger children or to take care of things while she was out. More than likely, Nevaeh was the reason that Lucille would stay home. Neither of them seldom talk to each other. They choose to ignore each other rather than acknowledge each other, but that doesn't chance the way that Lucille feels about her... about all her children. Nevaeh will forever be her baby. No matter how much of a pain she can be.

PART ONE
KEEP UP, LITTLE GIRL
Lucille Huntsman was an ordinary girl in an ordinary town surrounded by ordinary people. She was nothing special. She was the fifth born to the Huntsman clan of thirteen. She was brought up in an entirely Catholic family. Thirteen siblings was expected to a Catholic family of little-to-no wealth. Lucille wore the same dress to school everyday until she was thirteen years old and she started to develop breasts. She then got to wear her sister's hand-me-down's and her sister got something new. She was forced to go to work after school to help and support the family since her father wasn't making enough at the industry. She and her sister's would walk to the button factory six miles from their house and her brother's would go down the mountain into the farm village to look for some extra work. Money was always an issue.
Little did she know that a life of worthlessness wasn't for her. Lucille never dared dream bigger than her one-story shack with only three bedrooms to support a family of fifteen. Her parents' bed was in the living room. Her older brother's had blankets in the kitchen and her little sister's had mattresses under the stairs. This was her life and this is what she thought she'd always have until the summer of 1949 when Michael Quinton came to town on an 'important business call'.
Michael Quinton spotted Lucille walking home on his way into the coffee shop. He stopped her and begged her to join him for a cup of coffee. When at first she refused, he told her that he couldn't leave her side until she gave him a chance. His persistence forced into a date she wasn't sure she wanted to be part of. Quinton was well-dressed, extremely flirtatious, and constantly checking his watch as if it would somehow make time stop or go by quicker. Nevertheless, Lucille sat through the entire date and even shared a laugh or two during the hour. Afterwards he asked to call her, which she replied 'no thank you' and left the coffee shop without another thought of him.
PART TWO
NEVER THOUGHT I'D LOVE MONEY
Okay. That wasn't the end of the story. Lucille did see him again. Michael was in town for the rest of the week. She saw him out on the street purchasing coffee (lots of coffee), talking with clients, and through the window's of fine-dining restaurants. He stopped her once, caught her outside the window and tracked her down to the laundromat on the other side of the street. He looked awfully ridiculous in his fine clothes romping about the laundromat, chasing little Lucille Huntsman through the fluorescent store. "I think you'd really like me if you gave me another chance." He insisted, but Lucille wasn't interested. She pushed him aside and walked home... and he followed, calling: "I'm not going to give up on your so easily, Lucille Huntsman."
Her mother was in the living room, listing to the radio when Lucille came through the door. Her 'lover' still waiting outside, calling her name every now and then. He had left his dinner and chased her all the way back to her house. Whatever it was he saw in her, he knew that this woman was his forever. Lucille's mother told her that if she didn't go out with that boy that she would have to find somewhere else to sleep. Lucille accepted Michael's affection and for a while she walked with him in town, she accompanied him to fancy restaurants, and let him dote on her the way no one had ever doted on her before. Until she started to feel something... not quite love, but something.
He proposed only a few short weeks after they were dating. Lucille declined his proposal, which infuriated her mother. "If ya don't marry that boy then you ain't livin' in this house. Ya find yer own roof and yer own food." She returned the next day and accepted Michael's proposal without hesitation. It was Michael or it was homelessness. She chose Michael. And she could live with Michael. She could learn to tolerate Michael. She cared for him... She didn't love him, but she could learn to.
Michael never touched her. When they were married they slept in separate rooms. Michael never asked anything of her. He treated her like a queen. He invited his friends to come and meet her and talk with her. He hosted parties in her honour. He bought her a large house with lots of rooms and filled them with the things that made her smile. He loved her more than anyone had loved her before-- more than her family had ever shown.
One night they sat at the kitchen table, eating silently, as they often did. Michael would look at every now and then, waiting for her to say something, but she never did. Until the day he asked if she was happy. Lucille wasn't sure how to answer. She had everything she wanted, but she couldn't tell if she was happy. And then he started talking. He talked about his life, his family, his career, and his work... the work that got him where he was. They talked all night. Until finally they stopped talking...
PART THREE
MONEY WASN'T WORTH THIS
They didn't fall in love the usual ways. They didn't have some epic love story that would carry through the ages, but their love was pure and devoted. Lucille did more than 'learn' how to love Michael. It took a bit longer, but she fell for him harder than a desperate schoolgirl. Their life started with a son. Soon followed by more and more children. Michael had dreamed of a big family and while Lucille was timid of large families-- as her own-- she did it for Michael, because he wanted children to dote on and they had the money to do it. So she did it and she loved with each child how Michael's heart grew bigger and bigger.
And then Michael got sick. He lost that spark that Lucille had fought off for the first year they had known each other. She lost an entire year of love because of her stubbornness. Michael's personality dissolved away until the day they found him hanging from the tree outside their country house. There he was, swinging with the wind, behind the house with their nine children playing inside. The police filed it as a suicide, but nothing seemed quite right. Michael was a good father, a good husband... there wasn't even a note. He just died... left them without an explanation. His tumour made him mad, but he was getting better... Wasn't he?
Lucille packed up her children's things and loaded them into the car one late night and drove hundreds of miles until she reached her home state of Georgia. She gave them no explanation. She didn't even take all their things. She panicked-- picked them up and carried them out into the rain in the dead of night, knowing that whatever they left behind would never be seen again. The Ramsay House was supposed to be their fresh start... Lucille was sure of it.
