➣ Reading allows Akila to retreat into his own head for a bit and is his primary way of dealing with stress.
➣ He always knows when someone is lying to him because he can see into people's hearts.
➣ That being said, liars make him uncomfortable.
➣ Akila has a nonexistent poker face, so he pulls funny expressions when people lie around him.
➣ He read to Aurora when he was learning how to do so.
➣ He sometimes feels insecure about being the only adopted child.
➣ His greatest fear is being unwanted.

Out of Wedlock
Akila's mother was barely seventeen when she had him. Her family did a thorough job of making her feel disgraced for having a child out of wedlock. She had hoped to hide the pregnancy then disappear for a few weeks leading up to the birth and sneak him quietly off. But no. Akila was born three weeks early. It was there in a hospital in Mumbai that the teary-eyed girl gave up her baby in order to move on with her life. Kissing his forehead and promising to see him again before he even had memories, Akila was taken to the States to be adopted.
Akila was adopted by Michael and Lucille Quinton when he was about to turn one. He knew nothing about his mother's past since the adoption records were sealed, but he loved and adored his new parents, and they loved him in turn. He is not the baby of the family, but he is among the youngest. Akila had spent most of his life looking up to his older siblings, but his father was the sun and moon to him. Micheal taught Akila everything he knows.
One day when he was about six, Akila asked the question adopted parents can be uncomfortable asking: "Why don't I look like my brothers and sisters?" Akila very much had his biological parents' Indian features, while the rest of the family were very obviously white. He wasn't upset when his mother and father told him that they had gotten him from another country. They explained that Akila's birth mother had been unable to care for him, so they took him to be a part of their family. There were never too many kids, and it was assumed at the time that Lucille could no longer carry children... until she had her second set of twins that is.
Shortly after learning about his being adopted, Akila was watching television when a woman on the screen began speaking rapidly in a language he had never heard before. He asked his parents if his birth mother spoke that language, and they told him probably not because the woman on TV had been speaking Spanish. Upon asking if his mother had spoken a different language (since he could deduce other countries had other languages), Lucille told him that his mother had most likely spoken Hindi. Akila insisted on learning this language, so his wealthy father paid a tutor to teach Akila Hindi.
Within a few months, he could speak fairly well for a seven year-old, and he was thrilled he could speak two languages. This was around the time his father started acting differently. Being a child, Akila only noticed the major changes. The man he once looked up to was shouting and scaring the poor kid up to his room...
Isolation
The worst day of Akila's life came about a month after his tenth birthday. He awoke to discover that his father, his mentor and idol, had died. This broke Akila, for he had gone to his father for nearly everything, even the smallest of questions. He cried all day in his room, thinking about how happy the family had been just a few months before when his parents had had their second little wedding. It had been one of the best days of his life, even if he had had to wear dress clothes for the occasion.
Since his father's death, the once happy-go-lucky boy has been much quieter. He answers questions when asked, but he no longer invites conversation. He used to play with and even teach his younger siblings how to play around the house and explore. He would even read bedtime stories to them. Now, he's more closed off. He doesn't smile nearly as much. He prefers to be up in his room - reading and not talking to anyone. His little heart is broken, and part of him feels like he's been abandoned. Akila loves his mother, but he had been closer with his dad.

Akila looked up to his father and absorbed all of his teachings like a sponge. He spent a lot of time with his dad to learn everything he could. It wasn't until he was a little older, around four, that he started feeling like the odd kid out, but his father never treated him any different than the biological children. This kept up Akila's confidence up. As much as Akila loved his mother, he was always closest to his father. When he died, Akila became a shell of his former self: less excited and adventurous and much more withdrawn.

Akila adores his youngest sister and is very protective of her. He listens to her when she has problems and does his best to bring her comfort. He's been more distant with her since their father's passing, but he is trying to reconnect with her to rebuild their relationship. He was closest to her when she and Elliot were small and learning to read and write. He helped teach her and gave her advice by having her read to their dog, Aurora.

Lucille and Akila's relationship is fairly normal for a mother and son. Akila has always been closer to his father, but he did his best to reach out and comfort his mother after Michael passed. Unfortunately, Akila became to depressed, he pulled away from most of his family. Since moving into the Ramsay House, Akila has been set on being there for his mother because he knows how stressed she is with the big move and controlling her rowdy children.
