Backstory
The Romanov Dynasty
In the beginning Lysander was known as Alexei Romanov, the only son of Russian Tsar Nicholas II. Alexei Romanov was born on August 12, 1904 in Peterhof, just east of the Russian capital city of the time, St Petersburg.
He was the youngest of Nicholas II’s five children, but the only boy, making him the heir to the Russian throne. As Nicholas was unlikely to have any more male heirs, he was incredibly precious to his parents.
Alexei was a hemophiliac, a genetic disorder that prevents the blood clotting properly and can mean that even relatively small cuts can be life threatening. His mother, Alexandria also suffered from the disorder.
As a result, although Alexei was an energetic child, he was a sickly one. His parents – already over-protective of their only son and heir, were additionally protective of him because of his hemophilia. Keen to secure his health, the best doctors from around Russia and Europe were summoned, but unable to cure him.
In desperation, his mother eventually turned to less orthodox healers, including the infamous Rasputin. Over time, Rasputin began to exert more and more influence over the Romanov family, especially Alexei’s mother, Alexandra. The Russian public and nobility were unhappy with Rasputin’s influence, and rumors were spread that he and Alexandra were having an affair, and that he was influencing the Tsar’s politics, to the detriment of the war against Germany. Alexei didn't realize it at the time, but Rasputin's involvement with his care may well have had a real impact in turning the Russian public against the royal family..
The Russian civil war lead to his father Nicholas abdicating the Russian throne, and the family was imprisoned in the Alexander palace. For about a year he was cut off from the outside world, and they were treated like prisoners.
A Murderous Coup....and Escape
Alexei woke early one morning to Rasputin's urgent shaking. He was made to dress and be as quiet as possible. Then Rasputin returned with a peasant boy about Alexei's age. Rasputin dressed the boy in Alexei's clothes and had him lie in his bed. Alexei was confused, he had little inkling of what was to come in the next few minutes. He was rushed secretly out of the house with Rasputin as the guards all seemed to be busy with a task in the house. The task he would later find out was the murder of his family.
The guards went into each family member's room and instructed them to go down to the basement for transport. The family was murdered in a hailstorm of bullets, the darkness and the smoke from the guns hid the appearance of the peasant boy. Afterward the bodies were taken and mutilated and burned so that they wouldn't be recognized. The peasant boy that took Alexei's place, his identity would never be discovered. Alexei, not realizing the magnitude of what had occurred until after, went through a horrible despair and guilt. An innocent boy had died, along with his innocent sisters, and parents. He wanted to ask no demand why Rasputin had done such a thing, but the answer he received seemed obvious and chilling. He was the only son, only heir to the throne, and therefore the only one that must be saved according to Rasputin.
Alexei had always known Rasputin was a clever man, even conniving. He had somehow found out that this murder was to take place and he managed to sneak them both out of the town and they left the political war zone that was Russia after the immediate execution of the royal family.
A Wandering and Lost Royal
For the next four years he would travel with Rasputin across Europe. They travel to new places, with new people, and this also required a new name for Alexei. He had never thought about such things before, and it was Rasputin that gave him the name Lysander. Rasputin was strict in the way of his tutoring. His entire education fell to Rasputin after that. How it was the strange older man was so wise and cunning was a mystery to Lysander, but as time passed he began to question the small details he began to notice about the man that didn't make sense. Rasputin would never tell him anything.
Eventually they arrived in America, Lysander was about eighteen years old. The plan, Lysander had always assumed was to one day return to Russia and claim the throne as the rightful heir. Everything they did now was just to pass time. Rasputin did have a plan but it was not what Lysander expected. It was also interrupted by a new threat that emerged in their new home.

Rasputin finally unveiled his secret, he was a creature called an incubus.

So when Rasputin told him he would give him a gift, the gift of immortality, Lysander trusted him.
