IN MY EXPERIENCE, GHOSTS ARE MORE LIKE WISHES THAN NIGHTMARES.

Elliott woke up alone and in the dark. The shades had been pulled over the windows so that the sun didn't disturb him if he decided to sleep in. Despite that he had school the next day, Elliott had made that decision so to purposefully miss out. School made him nervous.... New schools made him terrified!
So when Elliott did wake up and he was all alone, he wanted to cry because he was afraid and there was no one there to protect him or comfort him. His bed had been lined with bars because he had been known to toss himself out of bed before in a fit or a nightmare.
Elliott raised his head slightly to see if the door was open. It wasn't. He would have to step over the bed, crawl across the floor to find someone to save him from the 'scary'. So the youngest of nine took a deep breath, counted to eleven (the number of Quintons he loved) and slipped out from under the sheets.
His toe hit the hardwood floors with a loud and horrible creaking noise that sent the muscles in his body into spas! Elliott retracted for a second, raising his foot back into bed and taking another deep breath, looking at the floor and then the distance he was from the door.
You can do this. He silently cheered himself on. Taking one more big breath, Elliott leapt out of the bed and charged for the door, casting it open with violent thrust and throwing himself outside of the room and into the middle of the hallway.
He landed on his bum. The door to his bedroom was swinging from the hinges and he could've sworn that he heard someone laugh from inside. The hairs on the back of his neck stood on edge and he felt the skin on his arms prickle as the door creaked in it's subtle sway.
The youngest was too afraid to move, but he looked with his eyes, noticing that he was the only one brave enough to leave their beds and venture into the hall this early. He felt the tears start to swell in his eyes as that feeling of loneliness crept over him once again.
"Mommie?" He whimpered into the shadows of the hall. "Jules?" His voice quiet at first, then gradually with more confidence and more alertness, Elliott gained some volume. "MOMMIE! JULES! ANYBODY!" He felt that panic that kids felt whenever they were lost in a crowd, except Elliott wasn't lost... he was just afraid.
Afraid because he could hear the voices in the walls and feel the cold hair brush over his exposed skin. His feet tinkled the carpet and the carpet tickled back. There was a brush of a finger across his neck and he screamed again. Nothing coherent, just fear and alarm from a touch he couldn't explain...

"the fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose"
Lucille was aroused awake when the sound of screaming entered her bedroom. She was quick to notice that Aletheia had wandered out before her mother could kiss her awake and the room was left in a cold flow. She was startled at first, because she didn't know where the sound had risen from.
It was after the second scream that Lucille realised it was one of her children that had been demanding her attention. First Aletheia in her fit the first night and now Elliott in his meltdown the next morning.
The thirty-nine-year-old mother scrambled out of bed in a rush, threw a silk robe over her form and ran out into the hall with a force on her heels. Elliott was curled into himself on the floor of the hall, choking on oncoming tears and screaming for his mother and nanny to come to his rescue.
Lucille was surprise she had been the first on the scene. Juliana, the caretaker for the Quinton's since Elsie and Elliott had been born, was almost always the first one-- everywhere! So when Lucille was there alone with her son in the hall, she grew worried.
She knelt beside her son and touched the back of his head with her palm pressed against his soft skull. "Eli... what's going on with you?" Her fingers brushed his hair down his neck and she instinctually pulled his body into hers.
He hadn't cried. She could tell, however, that he was close. Elliott was her most timid child; the true baby of the family. Though Lucille didn't mind having her baby remain a baby, she did wish that he had some more confidence to get on by himself.
"C'mon, baby..." She cooed, scooping him up into her arms and starting for the stairs. "Let's find you something to eat and then get you ready for school." Lucille held him tight in her grasp and kissed the side of his head, wrapping his legs around her waist and carrying down the stairs and into the kitchens to find what was for breakfast.
