Chapter one: Born from the ashes
Chapter Two: The Beginning of the End
Witchcraft was not made a capital offence in Britain until 1563. From 1484 until around 1750 some 200,000 witches were tortured, burnt or hanged in Western Europe.
Most supposed witches were usually old women, and invariably poor. Any who were unfortunate enough to be ‘crone-like’, snaggle-toothed, sunken cheeked and having a hairy lip were assumed to possess the ‘Evil Eye’ ! If they also had a cat this was taken as proof, as witches always had a ‘familiar’, the cat being the most common. Many unfortunate women were condemned on this sort of evidence and hanged after undergoing appalling torture. Witch fever gripped East Anglia for 14 terrible months between 1645 – 1646.
It was into this world Thomas was born. It was dark and dangerous times. His mother was only a young girl, 15 years old when she was raped by a man passing through their small village. Thomas never knew who his father was, he disappeared before he was born, and was never seen again. There were rumors that his mother's family had something to do with the man's disappearance. For Thomas's mother was a witch, and she came from a long powerful line of witches. Thomas's childhood days were normal, but often spent playing quietly as to not disturb the elders. He had no siblings, but he did have a few cousins that he played with. At a young age the elders decided to start Thomas's education in witchcraft.
Discretion and secrecy were always stressed upon the boy, and by the time he was a teenager he knew not to practice magic openly. Witch fever hit Thomas's village when he was 16, the village had grown in numbers with new arrivals but it also brought hysteria and suspicion. Good people started being accused of witchcraft and worshiping the devil, and they were put on trial. Then one night his family gathered in secret and told him he would be learning a new advanced magic. Something that was dangerous and discouraged in the witching community. They only told Thomas it was necessary because it may save his life one day. So Thomas began his instruction on Body Hopping, which was the act of placing your consciousness, your soul, into another's body. It was only intended to be a temporary thing, as there were certain instructions that had to be followed to protect the original body so to return to it later.
It was very difficult magic, and Thomas questioned the need for him to learn it even though he knew things were becoming dangerous in their village. When people started to be put to death, the family discussed the idea of them leaving the village for good and it was decided they would leave the very next morning.
And it was during that night that they finally came for Thomas's family. They had no warning, but someone must have suspected them and turned them in. They were each dragged out of their house in the middle of the night, his mother, grandmother, grandfather, the rest of his coven. There was no trial, no unspeakable tests they did to determine if you were a witch. Thomas realized with horror what was intended as they were each dragged to the stake, a large wooden beam constructed in the middle of the village. Surrounded by kindling, they were tied to the post as others came out of their houses to see what was going on. Thomas cried out with his family for help, and then realized not one looked upset, no one was crying, they all came out to watch them burn with an acceptance Thomas could not comprehend.
As they started to light the fires around them, Thomas realized this was the end. He was terrified. He didn't want to die. Tears streamed down his face silently as he heard screams coming from his family. His eyes flickered over the faces of everyone that watched, then his eyes met with a young man.
Thomas felt the pull of magic, and he also felt the heat of the fire and it scared him. He felt the pull of the magic again and he gave into it. He felt a blinding white light, then complete blackness.
Thomas opened his eyes to find himself looking at the sky, an early morning sky where the sun was just beginning to rise. He sat up and found himself laying in a bale of hay next to one of the houses. No one was around, it was quiet. He could see smoke drifting by on the breeze and he stood up and looked around the corner.
The smoke was wafting from the blackened stake, there was charred remains of wood and bodies around the pile. The stench had Thomas running across the field to a river to vomit. He then looked at himself in the river and didn't recognize the reflection. It was then he realized the horrible truth. He had body hopped into a spectator and his family had been burned along with his own body. He would never be able to return to it ever again.
The rest of the village went back to their lives, believing he and his family were dead. He quietly took what he needed for food and supplies and left the village before anyone started talking to him. He never returned and never looked back.
Chapter Two: The Beginning of the End
By the end of the 17th century, Thomas made a great migration across the sea and settled in Colonial America. He traveled with others that were fleeing persecution, and America was said to be a place where one could start over. At least that was what Thomas had hoped for. He travelled all over but never stayed long in one place to form any attachments. That didn't stop Thomas from discovering he had a daughter as a result of a casual fling with werewolf during his travels. The mother died tragically from cancer and Thomas took on his daughter Charity from then on. She is the only thing that ties him to this world and gives his life purpose.
